John Richard (Rich) Meyer passed peacefully from this life to be with God on February 6, 2024. He had been diagnosed with dementia and Parkinson’s disease. He was tenderly cared for by his wife, Juliet.
Richard was born January 3, 1947, to Louis W. and Rita Riedmueller Meyer in Fort Smith, Arkansas. His family moved to Birmingham, Alabama in 1954, and he attended Blessed Sacrament Elementary School and West End High School. Richard joined the US Marine Corps when he turned 18 and attended boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam. During his 20-year career as a Marine he was stationed at locations in the United States, serving as a flight engineer. He retired and settled in the New Bern area. After retiring from the Marines, he started a second career as an aircraft mechanic at the Naval Air Station. Richard had been an avid fisherman all his life and enjoyed participating in tournaments and fishing on the Neuse and Trent rivers. Richard met Juliet through Shag Dancing and they enjoyed many years of dancing with a large group of friends. Richard was an avid Alabama Crimson Tide fan and attended many games with his family.
Richard is survived by his wife of 28 years, Juliet along with his two sons, Steve Meyer, Tuscaloosa, Alabama; Kenneth Meyer, Brookwood, Alabama; and grandson Matthew Meyer of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He is also survived by his siblings Lou (Sandy) Meyer, Birmingham, Alabama; Karen Moore, Dothan, Alabama; Chris (Nancy) Meyer, Dothan, Alabama; and Greg (Vicki) Meyer, Austin, Texas, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Richard’s Memorial Mass will be on February 17 at St. Paul Catholic Church in New Bern. Visitation begins at 12:30 PM, and the Mass will begin at 1:00 PM. The inurnment ceremony will immediately follow Mass at Greenleaf Memorial Park. Please join the family for a reception at St. Paul Church following the inurnment.
