John Berkley Hurt Sr.

John Berkley Hurt Sr., age 84, of New Bern, North Carolina went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 5, 2023.

He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Cathy Hurt; two dear sisters-in-law, Edith Hurt and Gloria Mitchell; son, John B. Hurt, Jr.; daughters, Melissa Driver (David), Traci Brandon (Dewey), and Amber McLawhorn (Justin); grandsons, Trygg and Layn; and granddaughter, Allee.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Carl T. Hurt; his brothers, Carl Jr., Bill, and Kent; and grandson, Jaxon McLawhorn.

Other than the love of his life, Cathy, his wife, John loved music, singing and sharing God's Word. John and Cathy had a music ministry, Concert of Worship, and they sang together for over 45 years. He enjoyed feeding the ducks at Union Point. He loved the mountains and the seashore and good ole gospel music.

John has been a pastor of many churches in Virginia and North Carolina, but his favorite was South Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Aurora, NC. He served as pastor there for 11 and a half years until God called him home. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to South Creek Missionary Baptist Church, 1074 South Creek Road, Aurora, NC.

A celebration of life service will be held at South Creek Missionary Baptist Church on March 19, 2023 at 3:00 pm.

The family would like to extend a big "thank you" to the nurses and techs on the 4100 Comfort Care Hall at CarolinaEast Medical Center. Your care and compassion were awesome.
