John Waldo Gibbons

John W. Gibbons, 93, of New Bern, NC died peacefully at CarolinaEast Medical Center with loved ones by his side on Tuesday, June 20, 2023.

He grew up in Bronx, NY one of six children. He was proud to have served his country in Korea with the US Army during the Korean War.

He was married for 42 years to his loving wife Margaret until her passing. They raised their family in New York. John had a successful career with IBM in various New York metropolitan area locations for over 35 years. Upon his retirement the coupled moved to New Bern.

In New Bern, John was among the earliest members of The Emerald Golf Club and was an active golfer until earlier this year. He had enjoyed racquetball and then pickleball as well enjoying a weekly friendly poker group. He was known in his social network for having a seemingly endless supply of jokes.

He is survived by his loving partner and companion of 20 years, Marge Davis; his daughters, Deborah Fuller and Margaret (Denis) Hugo and his son Richard (Monika) Gibbons. He loved and was loved by his three grandchildren and their families; Dawn (David), Michael (Laura), and Derek including six great grandchildren; Jonathan, Wyatt, Delilah, Micah, Wesley, and Amelia.

A celebration of John’s life will be held in New Bern in late summer.

The family has requested in lieu of flowers donations to Folds of Honor Foundation in memory of John be sent to The Emerald Golf Club, 5000 Clubhouse Dr., New Bern, NC 28562.
