Formerly of Fishkill, New York, John made his home in New Bern for the past sixteen years. He served honorably in the U.S. Air Force from 1948 to 1952, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. John worked for the N.Y. State Dept. of Corrections from 1958 until retiring in 1991 as the Deputy Superintendent of Security. He had a passion for painting, cooking, traveling, and especially all things western and was a cowboy at heart. Above all, he loved his family and would do anything for them. He will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cosmo and Anna Battista and his sister, Barbara Totten.
John leaves behind to cherish his memory, his beloved family which includes his wife of 62 years, Linda Anne Battista; daughter, Carol Gilman (John); son, John Battista, Jr. (Elizabeth); grandchildren, Casey Myers (Breanna), Anna Battista, Grace Battista, and Paul Battista; three great grandchildren, Landon, Lillian, and Leah; as well as many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. on Monday, May 23, 2022 at Cotten Funeral Home.
Funeral Mass will be held at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, May 24, 2022 at Saint Paul Catholic Church with burial to follow in Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
