He grew up in Norfolk, VA., graduated from Maury High School and the University of Richmond. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters.
Mr. Johnson retired from Westinghouse Electric Corporation in 1984, and moved to New Bern in 1986. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in New Bern. He was an avid sailor on his boat the Why Knot, and belonged to Fairfield Harbour Yacht Club, Men’s Golf Club, Tennis Club, and Chorus and was active in organizing many community activities.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Louise P. Johnson, a son James P. Johnson (Donna) of Baldwin, MD., a daughter Jerilyn L. Johnson of Lima, OH., and a son Stephen D. Johnson (Sandra) of Lima, OH., He is also survived by four grandchildren Mark (Katie), Brian (Julie), Sharon, and Sarah, 8 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial Service will be held at First Presbyterian Church Saturday September 20, 2014 at 11 am, with inurnment to follow in Church Memorial Garden.
