One of six children, Flo was born in Frackville, Pennsylvania, on October 5, 1925, to George and Mildred Haupt.
Flo met the love of her life in early 1945. She was then a student in the nursing program at the Pennsylvania State University. Flo never completed her degree. She and her dashing Lieutenant married in the Fall of 1945, thrusting the newlyweds into the beginning of more than thirty years of military life together.
Throughout her life, Flo lived in Camp Lejeune, Quantico, Washington, D.C., Norfolk, VA, Patterson, NY, Omaha, NE, Carlisle Barracks, PA, several Florida cities, coastal Maine, Puerto Rico, and Naples, Italy. At sea, for two years, Flo lived aside her “Captain Dave” on the trawler, S.S. Marnie, as they sailed to East Coast ports. In their New Bern years, Flo and Dave lived in Greenbrier, McCarthy Court, and Homeplace.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Colonel David G. Jones, USMC, Retired, her sister, Charlotte Hazlett, and three brothers, Charles, Roy, and Carus Haupt.
Flo is survived by her four children: daughters, Nancy Jones of West Palm Beach, Florida; Leslie Green of New Bern; Laura Poland of Norfolk, Virginia; and son, Peter Jones (Alberta) of Wenatchee, Washington. She is also survived by her younger brother, Lee Haupt (Judy) of Mt. Sydney, Virginia.
Nana Flo is survived by eight grandchildren, Andrew Nusbaum, Cara Oster, Emily Nusbaum, Suzanne Gigliello, Paul Gigliello, David Jones, Jennifer Jones, and Bruce Jones; and six great-grandchildren, Allen Edelman, Landon Schendera, Teddy Jones, Eloise Jones, Zoe Oster, and Emmett Oster.
Flo was the ultimate “Hold Down the Fort” Woman, while Dave defended the country. She was an avid volunteer whenever an opportunity presented itself in her community, a member of the First Presbyterian Church of New Bern, and a member of Chapter BB P.E.O. She was an accomplished quilter, and a voracious reader. Flo loved opera. She was a “Winner-Take-All”, uncompromising Gin Rummy player and never conceded a game even to her own grandchildren!
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of New Bern, NC, at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, July 31, 2024. The family will receive friends in the Session House following the service.
