Carolyn Yvonne Glasgow

Carolyn Yvonne Glasgow, 88, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2024. Carolyn was born on January 3, 1936, in Kingsport, TN to the late Haskell & Mary Ruth (Everhart) Logan. As a young child, her maternal grandmother nicknamed her “Carolina Moon.” At the age of one, Carolyn survived the Great Flood of 1937 in Louisville, Kentucky with her parents. Her childhood was filled with the gatherings of a large extended family in Greene County, Tennessee. Some of her happiest memories were of gathering eggs and riding the pony down the long road to retrieve mail from the mailbox, particular delights granted her on her maternal grandparents’ farm. She had fond memories of the country store owned by her paternal grandparents and recalled sitting on the store counter with “Papa Logan”. It was a central hub for the locals, and a gathering place for many community suppers.

Growing up, Carolyn played the piano, the clarinet, and the accordion. She was an excellent student and graduated from Dobyns Bennett High School in 1953. She went on to pursue a nursing degree at the University of Memphis School of Nursing and graduated on September 23, 1957. It was during nursing school that she met her husband of 60 years, Robert “Bob” Glasgow.

Carolyn’s greatest love was her children and grandchildren. Family meant everything to her, and she passed this devotion on to her loved ones. Carolyn was a kind and giving person who had the gift of making friends easily. As a result, she had a tremendous number of friends, many of whom were lifelong friends. She was fortunate to travel with some of these friends and her family to places like the Panama Canal, the San Blas Islands, the Grand Canyon, San Diego, Boston, Iowa, and most recently New Orleans.

Her giving nature brought much joy to those struggling with the limitations of age or frailty. For many years she hosted large parties in her home specifically for the elderly parishioners in her church community. When Carolyn began to experience her own physical limitations, her determination to look after others was unshakable.

One of her greatest pleasures was reading, and she read a staggering number of books. Carolyn was a quick and voracious reader on many subjects: history, historical fiction, religion, biographies, and classic literature. To the delight of her grandchildren and children, she was persuaded in the last couple of months to join the Harry Potter fan club and nearly finished all seven books. Among her most cherished possessions was a red wooden wagon that her father made for her when she was a small child. It could be seen on top of the refrigerator in her apartment in New Bern, NC where she lived from August of 2023 until her passing.

Carolyn was a talented quilter who was part of a local quilting club. She spent many decades making beautiful keepsakes for all her many family members. Her last productions were given just this past Christmas. In addition to quilting, Carolyn made the decision much later in life to learn how to play the organ. After taking lessons from a professional, she did so well she became her church organist. She was a devoted Christian and felt this was some small way she could serve others.

Some say Carolyn missed her calling to be a veterinarian; her love of animals cannot be overstated. The Glasgow children grew up with hordes of beloved dogs and cats. A large St Bernard once roamed their Bristol neighborhood, a point of pride for the Glasgows. Her beloved home in the woods on Dry Ridge was a virtual sanctuary for foxes, wild turkeys, a herd of deer, and birds of every feather. At one point, a family of great danes and their pups traipsed the property. Her children drew the line when she began feeding the raccoons. Carolyn's beloved cats, Roy and Sophie, were her loyal companions in her later years – their importance only surpassed by her six children.

In addition to her parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Robert M. Glasgow; son, Michael Glasgow; grandson, Ian Glasgow; and granddaughter, Chelsea Wilson.

Left to cherish her memories are her loving brother, Larry Logan (Beth); son Tom Glasgow (Pat Leigh); daughters, Amy Glasgow, Cindy Brody (Tom), Carmen Baeza (Tony), and Mandie Glasgow; twelve grandchildren, Nathaniel Glasgow, Emily Glasgow, Elizabeth Glasgow, Josh Wilson, Arick Wilson, Kara Brody, Laura Brody, Makeo Baeza, Kellan Baeza, Madilynn

Klein, Logan Ramey, and Aaron Ramey; great-grandson, Edan Johnson; nephew Jeremy Logan; niece Kelly Burkinshaw; and a host of cousins and friends too numerous to count.

Graveside memorial service will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at East Lawn Memorial Park, 4997 Memorial Blvd, Kingsport, TN 37664.
