Manuel C. “Sonny” Mello, age 70, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family Wednesday, April 13, 2011 in St. Luke’s Hospital. He was the husband of Jacqueline (Cormier) Mello to whom he had been married for 50 years.
Born in New Bedford the son of the late Manuel C. and Gladys (Rollins) Mello, he was a lifelong resident of the city. Mr. Mello was employed as a Truck Driver for Quality Oil for 10 years, prior to that he worked as a Forge Operator for the former Chamberlain Manufacturing and he also worked for Titleist Golf in New Bedford.
Mr. Mello was former President of the Southwind Amateur Radio Club and former President of the Saints Motorcycle Club. Sonny was a Ham Radio Operator and his call sign was W1ESG, he was an avid NASCAR fan, attending several races and enjoyed riding his late son Duane-Alan’s “FATBOY” motorcycle.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his two daughters Karin Mello and her companion Danny Vaudry and June Medeiros and her companion Eddie Roy all of New Bedford; a sister Shirley Roderiques of New Bedford; two grandchildren Brandy Lynn Fortin and her husband Troy and Jason Medeiros; two great grandsons Jake Austin Beaulieu and Troy Duane-Alan Fortin; his two God Children Brenda Lee Roderiques of Cranston, RI and Daniel Querido Jr. of Flroida, several nieces and nephews and his Parrot Zak”. Mr. Mello was also the father of the late Duane-Alan Mello.
