Louis E. Woodis, a beloved member of the Dartmouth community, passed from this life to the next on November 12, 2024, unexpectedly at his home in Dartmouth. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Eunice Woodis, with whom he shared over 60 years of marriage. They were wed on Christmas Day in 1954, beginning a lifetime of love and devotion.
He was the son of the late Wallace Woodis and Gertrude Pittsley Woodis.
Louie, alongside his brother Donald, was a familiar and friendly face in the community, running Lou & Don’s Service Station for many years. Later in life, he worked as a Teamster truck driver for Gilman’s Liquors, where he was admired for his hard work, reliability, and strong sense of duty.
A man of great integrity, sacrifice, love, and loyalty, Louie was a pillar of strength for his family. He cared deeply for his mother and five brothers, always stepping in wherever there was a need. Family was a lifelong priority for him, and he never hesitated to offer support, guidance, and generosity to those he loved. Louie demonstrated honesty and fairness in all aspects of his life, setting a strong example of kindness and generosity.
He was the proud father of three children: Dianne Woodis and her partner Darrell Porter; Kathleen Barclay and her husband, Rev. George Barclay, and his predeceased daughter, Gail Woodis Perry and her husband Stephen Perry. Louie’s role as a grandfather to Jaime Garman Haley, Seth Woodis-Perry, Joshua Barclay, and Daniel Barclay, Erica Romehild and James Kennedy brought him great joy, and he was a loving great-grandfather to Shiloh Barclay, with Baby Barclay expected in 2025.
Louie leaves behind one brother, Roger Woodis and is predeceased by 5 siblings.He also leaves behind his dearest friends, Norman Agostinho, Joseph Devlin and George Bumpus.
Born in Acushnet, MA Louie grew up in Freetown and the greater New Bedford area. His career at the family gas station and as a truck driver reflected his hardworking spirit and dedication. Yet, it was his deep commitment to family and friends that defined his life. Louie was always there with a helping hand, a warm smile, and a willingness to sacrifice for others.
If you are able to attend his memorial service, please remember Louie by wearing jeans and a flannel shirt, his favorite everyday clothes. It is a fitting tribute to a man who valued authenticity and lived simply. His example of steadfast character is a legacy we can all be inspired by.
Calling hours will be held from 3-4 PM. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, November 22, 2024 at 4-5 pm at Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford, MA.
The family invites everyone who knew and loved Louie to join them in celebrating the remarkable life of a man who touched so many with his love, fairness, and integrity.
