Born in New Bedford, daughter of the late George H. McCarthy Sr. and Gertrude (Bradshaw) McCarthy, she was educated in local schools and was employed in the garment industry at the former Cliftex Manufacturing Co., and was a communicant of St. Killian’s Church.
She was past president of the Thomas E. Tuttle VFW Post 7239, Ladies Auxiliary lifetime member, Special Olympic volunteer and bowling at Wonderbowl in the couples leagues. Mrs. Couto enjoyed country music, dancing, family gatherings, especially St. Patrick’s Day, and was a diehard Red Sox fan.
She is survived by sons George Dauphin and his wife Kathleen and William Couto Jr. and his wife Jeanne all of Acushnet; daughters Patricia Reul of Acushnet and Diane Macek of New Bedford, stepson Michael Couto and his wife Romey of CA, a daughter in-law Janelle Dauphin of New Bedford; sisters Gertrude Bissonnette and Mary Rodrigues all of Fairhaven, twelve grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Couto was mother of the late Earl Dauphin and sister of the late George H. McCarthy Jr., Kathleen Reed, Eileen St. Aubin, John J. McCarthy and Stephen F. McCarthy.
Her funeral will take place Saturday, July 6, 2013 at 8AM from the ROCK FUNERAL HOME 1285 Ashley Blvd. New Bedford, followed by her funeral mass at 9AM in St. Killian’s Church 306 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford.
