I feel very sad to hear of Kathy's passing.  She was a caring and loving person, and such a wonderful nurse.  I can still see her beautiful smile when I worked with her at the Oncology Center in Dartmouth. My sincere condolences to Curt and their children during this most difficult time. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. I know that Kathy is in heaven singing with the angels. RIP Kathy, you will be greatly missed.

I met Kathy in RI through her friend Cindy. 
I was only in Kathy’s presence a handful of times. But… that was all I needed to know Kathy was a special human being.  At each encounter Kathy was full of such enthusiasm. She was always happy, funny, kind and thoughtful.  The wealth of condolences included here are a testament to the deep love her family and friends have for her. Your shining presence will always be in the memories of so many Kathy, including mine.

My name is Mary (Heffernan) Bryson and Kathy was my closest 2nd cousin. Our grandmothers were sisters and our Moms were 1st cousins.  I was born about 3-1/2 months after Kathy. Most of my memories of Kathy took place between the ages of about 9 and 13 years old. We lived the next town over from the Reeds. During that time, on quite a number of weekends, I would stay all weekend with Kathy. Her siblings were a bit older than she was and she was the only child left at home. I was #3 out of 4.  So, it was nice for me to go over to her house and not be surrounded by so many people. We had tons of fun! We watched movies, ate popcorn, played hide-n-seek with the neighborhood kids, the next-door neighbor had a skating rink in their backyard one year. We went to movies, bowling, she came to our cottage on Lake Ontario a few times, lots of fun stuff.  The most special thing I remember is we made up this game of Hide & Seek with Clues. We would hide our stuffed animals around the upstairs, and write little clues along the way to find each other's. Also, I had a very special Winnie the Pooh puppet that I slept with every night. I called him Poohy, Kathy made up a whole song called Oh Poohy. It had a few different verses and a catchy tune. I and my older sister can still sing it to this day!After high school started, we kind of grew apart. But there were many times I thought of her and those fun weekends during my life since then.  Curt, I am SO VERY SORRY that I cannot attend the funeral due to a recently broken ankle. I will be with you in spirit. I'm looking forward to singing with Kathy when we meet again.  I love all you Moraes!!

Kathy was a great friend with tons of energy and that laugh!  I have a million wonderful memories like playing our guitars and her back porch or the piano in the basement, tree forts, camping and going everywhere on our bikes. Even though we are grown and live far apart, we still felt like close friends and I think every one she met feels that way. A gorgeous human... Kathy had an indescribable radiance about her. Anyone who met her felt her kindness right away and was instantly surrounded by her warmth...You were part of every milestone in my life: birthdays, Christmas, Sunday dinners, Rangeley, weddings, funerals, graduations, etc. But it was the days in between that mattered - where you showed me how to live with all this emotion, how to handle life when it felt too much. Kathy and I were good friends during middle school and became best friends in high school. My “growing up” memories are fused with memories of Kathy. On a summer’s day you might find us bombing around on our bikes, playing tennis and then going to Don and Bobs for frozen custard. We would play duets on the piano and play games and laugh until one or the other or both of us would shriek with laughter so intense that we couldn’t breathe. In high school, there were frequent sleepovers and working on math homework together, all the way up through calculus class (I remember Kathy saying “I’m really GOOD at math!”) We were in all of the plays together, we took voice lessons and sang in chorus together. We were on the same softball team for several years (the other team would call “move out” to their outfielders when Kathy would get up to bat!) Kathy managed to get a car a lot so we would often head out to Eastview Mall to shop and hang out. Kathy’s mother, Margaret Mary, never forgave the two of us for dying her new washing machine orange when we dyed our Mercy High uniforms on the last day of classes in senior year (unfortunately they came out a dull brown color).
These are a few memories that came to mind just now among countless others. College, careers, and living hundreds of miles apart meant that we were not actively involved in each other’s day to day lives once we left Rochester, but time could not touch the immense love we had for each other. Any time I saw her over the years,  we were just Kath and Kate again, and something fun was bound to happen!  I was profoundly blessed to have Kathy in my life early on- zany, fun loving, fiercely loyal, abundantly talented Kathy. I will carry all of our shared memories forward into the sunset.

I worked with Kathy decades ago when she came to SLH Critical Care.  She was a force of happiness and positivity, not to mention a great RN. She made it clear she wanted to work in Oncology way back then and certainly excelled in that field as soon as she had the opportunity.  She has left a legacy! Dear Family, Friends and Colleagues of Kathy:

I was surprised to hear of Kathy’s passing so young-a great loss to humanity- she leaves a long legacy of greatness at Southcoast Health and in her community.   I was not surprised to see so many  “full” beautiful messages already posted.

I really “know” Kathy only in a professional capacity.  I remember her being so super supportive when I made the transition from staff nurse to a managerial role.  The realities were immense like when you go from caregiver to patient and  Kathy seemed to intuitively be supportive and nurturing and helped people like me understand the realities of healthcare without being superior, but “we are all in this together”.

Kathy always had a warm and easy smile, a gentle touch of the arm to let us know we are all heard and valued even if we “agree to disagree”.  My fondest memories are being near Kathy during our big meetings in the McBratney amphitheater at SLH, in a dimly lit room hear and see Kathy in the most gracious way, with a sort of tentative, but bold voice like a young person asking for an extra cookie after dinner (beg to differ) the counterpoint of the presentation, whether it be people over profits or advocacy  for “her nurses, the oncology staff, hospital staff at all sites”.

One of the pharmacists that too turned provider to patient called nurses “angels on earth” after all his great years of providing care.  This is how I would like to remember Kathy.  In those moments she was a  bright light in a dark room, a beacon of hope, her soothing angelic voice and bold blonde hair “standing up to cancer” and standing out front for what she believed and the people she believed would stand with her, but never behind her, because we all count, and she knew this and would always be there for the fight for all of us!

I am so sorry for your loss, but as you see, Kathy was like a caped superhero with this marvelous RN alter ego that has positively left an impact.

To Kathy’s family, I’m so sorry for your loss. I can’t even imagine how painful this is for you. I’m sure you already know how much she was loved by everyone. There is such a feeling of sadness, loss and immense grief over her passing. Kathy radiated love, kindness, and compassion with everyone she encountered.   She was so passionate about oncology. She made me want to be better. She always told me “Try other areas, but you are an oncology nurse.” She was all things good. She made the world a better place.  She made my world better.  We talked about our beliefs. We talked about God’s plans.  There is no doubt where she is right now. I hope that brings you solace. I know in my lifetime I will never meet another person like her. I met Kathy and Curt when I attended Salve. As a transfer they along with their special friends helped me feel welcome at my new school. We spent many nights sing our hearts out. She got me involved with the Salve folk group and chorus. Kathy your love and joy was infectious   When I started teaching and teaching at Bishop Stang Kathy and Curt often welcomed me into their home for fun, music and even to recover from a knee injury. Dear Family,

Kathy was an absolute ball of laughter. I worked in both clinics where she was at and our offices sat near each other. She always had such a bright and welcoming smile in the morning, greeted everyone with such a warm hello each time she walked inside. I was pregnant the same time around her daughter and she absolutely loved talking about her new grandbaby. We shared so much conversations about our babies, her grandbaby's milestones, pictures. She had so much love in her. My heart goes out to you. She was truly a wonderful and kind person and welcomed me with such open arms.  The impact she has made, i will never forget. I am so saddened to hear about Kathy’s passing. I had spoken to her early last week. She was the first person we met at the cancer center prior to my wife starting treatment. She was so warm and comforting and positive that she completely put my wife at ease. She will always be remembered for her kindness, her smile, and genuine caring that she passed on to all who knew her. Rest in Heavenly peace Kathy, your work on earth is done. You are loved and will be singing in Heaven with your beautiful voice.

I will remember Kathy for her outgoing and engaging manner, her compassion and knowledge as a talented clinician and Nursing Director, and most of all for the love she had for her family.  For all of her accomplishments (of which she was so humble), nothing compared to the happiness she would express when providing the latest update on any of you. My last memory is running into her while dining out in New Bedford; classic Kathy....  smiling and laughing with friends but never too busy to catch up with me and meet others, (some strangers to her), that I was with. Her gift for interesting conversation was as endless as her ability to make the world brighter just by her presence.  My deepest condolences to all of you as you mourn your wife and mother, one of the kindest women I have ever known.
