John P. Sheerin, 88, of New Bedford passed away Tuesday, October 24, 2023 in St. Luke’s Hospital after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of Phyllis J. (Meunier) Sheerin with whom he shared 66 years of marriage.
Born in New Bedford, son of the late Patrick J. and Mary (Crowley) Sheerin, he was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Sheerin (Jack) graduated from New Bedford High School in 1955. While there, he was a captain of the basketball team and played on both the soccer and football teams.
After graduation, Jack went on to serve in the United States Army where he was chosen to be part of the Presidential Honor Guard. During his time in the service, Jack performed with the first mixed service (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines) drill team as its sergeant on the Gary Moore Show.
Jack worked as the warehouse manager at New Bedford Wholesale Liquor, Freddie Dee’s Narragansett Sales and Colonial Wholesale Beverage from 1958 until his retirement.
In his free time, Jack was a high school football official for the Southeastern Massachusetts Football Officials Association (SMFOA) for over 20 years and spent weekends officiating local high school games all over southeastern Massachusetts.
Jack and Phyllis spent many enjoyable winters with their friends and family in North Port, Florida.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Patti Tschaen and her husband, Dr. David Tschaen of Holmdel, NJ, Michael S. Sheerin and his wife Ada (Pozo) of Miami, FL, and John P. Sheerin, Jr. and his wife Darcy (Chadwick) of Bridgewater, MA; grandchildren, Dr. Brittany Tschaen of Philadelphia, PA, Brendan Tschaen and his wife Carly (Penner) of Westfield, NJ, Mikaela Sheerin of Oakland, CA, Angelique Sheerin of Louisville, KY, Trey Sheerin, Cierra Sheerin, and Summer Sheerin, all of Bridgewater, MA; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Walburger Wise, Edward Sheerin, Thomas Sheerin, Mary Rivet, and Rita Kozaczka.
His memorial visitation will be Monday, October 30, 2023 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford followed by a service at 1 p.m. in the funeral home.
