John Freitas, Sr., of Danbury, husband of the late Dorothy (Grace) passed away at Glen Hill Convalescent Center on Saturday, October 1, 2022. John was born in New Bedford, MA on May 2, 1924, the third youngest of thirteen children to the late Avellino and Maria (Gonsalves) Freitas. He was educated in New Bedford and enlisted in World War II where he served proudly from March 1943 until March 1946.
In 1953, John and his family moved from New Bedford to Danbury, CT where he worked for Sperry Rand, then Sikorsky Aircraft as a machinist. One of John’s proudest accomplishments was opening his own business, Freitas Machine in Danbury. In that capacity, he met and enjoyed the company of many new and long-lasting friends. In retirement, John joined Danbury’s Senior Center where he was able to fulfill his life-long dream of painting. Over the years, he painted more than 100 works which were given to family and friends to enjoy.
John is survived by his daughter, Janice (Edward) Strait of Essex, CT, and a son, John Jr. (Cathy) of Maple Grove, MN. In addition he leaves five grandchildren, E. Carl Jr. (Sara) Strait, Matthew (Donna) Strait, Dr. Brandon (Malaythip) Strait, Joshua (Hannah) Freitas and Samantha Freitas. John was extremely happy to have known his seven great-grandchildren, Kyle, Ryan, Mason, Madeleine, Sophia, Henry Strait and the newest arrival, Noa Freitas. He is also survived by one sister, Sally Gouvea of San Diego, CA.
Private graveside services will be held on Tuesday, October 11, 2022, at Pine Grove Cemetery in New Bedford, MA with military honors. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Cameron’s Kids, c/o Debbie Goulart, 71 Bullivant Farm Road, Marion, MA 02738.
