Henry William Hazell, Jr., age 87, of New Bedford, died Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River after a brief illness. He was the husband of Claire I. (Lacombe) Hazell with whom he shared 64 years of marriage.
Born in New Bedford, a son of the late Henry W. Hazell, Sr. and the late Mahala (Wilcox) Hazell, he was a lifelong resident of the city.
Mr. Hazell graduated from New Bedford High School and entered the United States Coast Guard in 1948. He was a Korean War Veteran of the United States Army, serving from December 15, 1950 to December 3, 1953. He worked for 31 years as a Foreman with Commonwealth Gas formerly New Bedford Gas, retiring in 1984. He also worked part-time at the former McDermott’s Fish Market for many years.
Henry was a longtime member of Grace Episcopal Church, was a member of the American Legion, the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Lakeville and the Panthers Social Club. He enjoyed fishing and was an avid golfer.
In addition to his wife, he leaves a son Dr. Kenn W. Hazell and his wife Blanca of Coral Springs, FL; two granddaughters, Kelly M. and Natalie E. Hazell of Coral Springs, FL; a sister, Doris Judy of Las Vegas, NV; three nephews, Charlton Hazell of New Bedford, Mark Lacombe of Dartmouth and Peter Lacombe of New Bedford; four nieces, Gail Machado, Donna Makin, Heidi Cope and Laurie Gibbs all of New Bedford. He was also the brother of the late James Hazell and Beverly Oliver.
His funeral will be held Friday, October 16, 2015 at 8:30 am from the ROCK FUNERAL HOME, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Grace Episcopal Church, corner of County & School Streets, New Bedford.
