THOMAS J. "TATER" BANET, 86 years of age, died at home with his family by his side on Sunday, May 19, 2013. The son of the late Joseph and Eva (Zimmerman) Banet, T.J. was born July 5, 1926 in Floyds Knobs, Indiana. He was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Albany, St. Mary’s Mens Club and thoroughly enjoyed the church bible study group. T.J. was a loyal volunteer at Floyd Memorial Hospital in New Albany for 25 years and for 22 years cardiac rehab at Floyd Memorial was a center of his life. Along with his parents, T. J. was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Sue; siblings, Amelia Leist and Anthony, Alfred, Irvin, Bernard, James and Odell Banet.
T.J. will be remembered for his dedication to his family and the Catholic faith, his quick wit, contagious smile, love of the outdoors and cunning card playing skills.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, E. Anne (Goodyear) Banet; children, Thomas Banet (Gail), Gerry Banet (Paige), Rebecca Banet (Marje Albohm); sister, Marietta Gesenhues; brother, Arthur Banet; grandchildren, Greg, Nathan, Benjamin, Alison, Noah, Benjamin, Austin and Abby; great grandchild, Chase; and caregiver, Margaret Smith.
Visitation will be 11:00 am ~ 1:00 pm Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 8th and Spring Streets, New Albany, Indiana. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 pm Thursday at the church with burial to follow in St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Cemetery, Floyds Knobs, Indiana.
Expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, New Albany or Hosparus of Southern Indiana.
