DANIEL HUMPHREYS CANNON, M.D., 90, died Sunday, December 22, 2013 at his home. The son of the late Newland H. and Katherine (Bulleit) Cannon, Daniel was born January 1, 1923 on a farm in Floyd County, Indiana. He was a 1941 graduate of New Albany High School and the University of Louisville with a M.D. degree in 1946. He served an internship at the old St. Edward’s Hospital in New Albany, began a private practice in 1948, closing his office in 2002. He was a Captain in the U.S. Medical Corps from 1951 to 1954. Dr. Cannon held life memberships in the following professional societies: Fellow, American Academy of Family Practice, Indiana Academy of Family Practice, Indiana State Medical Association and the Floyd County Medical Society. He was a member of the Phi Chi Medical Fraternity, member of the Jefferson Masonic Lodge 104, York and Scottish Rites, Shrine and George Rogers Clark Chapter Order of DeMolay. Dr. Cannon was a member of Mensa, past President of the Board of Regents at Fairview Cemetery, past President of Howard Steamboat Museum; retired member and past President of New Albany Chamber of Commerce and the New Albany Exchange Club. He was a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, commissioned in 1985. Dr. Cannon served as Floyd County Coroner for 18 years and served on the County Council for 4 years. He was a published author and his hobbies included gardening, gourmet cooking, hunting, fishing, camping, reading, bridge, games, euchre, furniture repair, antiques, remodeling and cabinetry. Along with his parents, Dr. Cannon was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marilynn, after 63 years of marriage, brother, David R. Cannon; and daughter-in-law, Mary Alice Didat Cannon. Survivors include his sons, Daniel H. Cannon of New Albany, Christopher C. Cannon (Denise) of California, Lawrence G. Cannon (Susan Myers Cannon, MD) of St. Louis and Thomas B. Cannon of New Albany; sister-in-law, Barbara Eskew Cannon; 5 grandchildren; and 1 great grandchild. Visitation will be 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm Friday at Kraft Funeral Service, 708 E. Spring Street, New Albany, Indiana and after 10:00 am Saturday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in New Albany. A Masonic Service will be 7 PM Friday at the funeral home. There will be no visitation at the funeral home on Saturday. His Funeral Service will be 11:00 am Saturday at the church with burial and military honors to follow in Fairview Cemetery.
