Chief William C. Townsend, age 79 passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2023, at Clark Memorial Hospital. Bill was born in New Albany, Indiana on March 24, 1944, to the late Chester Townsend and Ila Baker Townsend. Bill was a retired account manager with McGrain and McCauley and later in his career a self-employed accountant. He was an Iraq war veteran and retired from the United States Army Reserves after 32 years of service as an officer with the rank of CW4. He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, the Optimist Club, VFW Post 1693 and the American Legion Post 28. He enjoyed playing softball and never missed any of his children or grandchildren's events.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by siblings, Dorothy Clark, Robert Townsend, Wilma Haas, Barbara Townsend and Steve Townsend.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Sandy Townsend; two daughters, Kimberly (James) McClure and Penny (Scott) Ferguson; grandchildren, Alexa "Hassy" (Cody) Carver, Samantha "Sam" (Austin) Bibb, Jonathan "Jon Jon" (Breanna) Ferguson, Taylor "LT" (David) Lapsey and Cameron "Cami Sue" Ferguson; great-grandchildren, Nolan, Evangeline, Jalen, Brady, Cynthia, Ellanor and Remi; siblings, Richard (Barbara) Townsend and Shirley (Mike) Reidinger; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation for Bill will be held Sunday, April 30, 2023, from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM and Tuesday, May 2, 2023, from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM, at Kraft Funeral Service, 708 E. Spring Street, New Albany, Indiana 47150.
Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 1752 Scheller Avenue, New Albany, Indiana 47150 with burial at 2:00 PM at Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1415 North Gate Road, Madison, IN 47250.
