Our dearest beloved mother Petronella Elizabeth Soorsma at the age of 104, entered into rest at Lions Manor Winnipeg, Manitoba, on Friday afternoon the 30th of August 2024.
Elizabeth was born in Marrum, Friesland the Netherlands on January 24 1920 to Leviena van Der Wal and Cornelis Boersma. She was sister to four older brothers until her younger twin sisters were born.
She graduated from Middlebare school, and further schooling qualified her as a seamstress and she opened a sewing school in her parents' home. She sewed many wonderful articles, she also loved knitting and crafting, she enjoyed making gifts for her family and friends
Elizabeth enjoyed to read a variety of literature, as well as keeping up to date with the world news, perusing the Winnipeg Free Press diligently each day.
On June 28 1942 she married the love of her life Lolke Soorsma. They set up housekeeping in Hoorn, North Holland the Netherlands, where Lolke opened up his blacksmith shop.
In 1951 they immigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada with three children: Fred, Leviena and Jackie the fourth child Neil was born in Canada. Elizabeth provided a loving home for her family.
Elizabeth and Lolke were married for 61 years. On Lolke's retirement they spent many winters in their trailer in Texas with their black labs Shadows, Lucky and Kazan.
They were devote Christians attending Calvary Temple and in later years Elizabeth enjoyed regular visitation from Calvary Temple volunteers.
She was predeceased by her husband Lolke Soorsma, her parents Leviena and Cornelius Boersma, her siblings Tjalling, Watse,Tiete, Lieuwe Boersma, Tine Van Der Veen and Griet Boersma. Her sons in law William Boychuk and James Barkman, daughter in law Margaret Soorsma and granddaughter Darlene Soorsma.
Elizabeth will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her four children: Fred Soorsma (Eva), Leviena Boychuk (William), Jackie Soorsma (James Barkman), Neil Soorsma (Nancy). Beppe to her Grandchildren, Lisa Kieker (Bruce), Frederik Soorsma, Marla Gangler (Chris), Christina Poolie (Kyle), Deanna Colliatie (Shane), Corey Soorsma and Connor Soorsma. Her 5 great grandchildren and all those that had the privilege to know her.
Service will be held at Green Acres, 1 Green Acres Lane, Navin, Manitoba. Wednesday, September 4, 2024.Viewing at 9:30 and service to be held at 10:00 AM.
The family would like to thank her caregivers at Lions Manor especially those caring for her at the ending of her life. A special mention to Pastor Greg Marsh.
