Kenneth "Ken" Gordon Groff

On November 28, 2015, at Concordia Hospital, Kenneth passed away at the age of 94 years. He is survived by his 2 sons, Darrell and Dana (Lorraine), grandchildren Kenneth (Kaeli) and Kelly (Jon), as well as innumerable nieces and nephews.

Ken was predeceased just over six months ago by his loving wife, Margaret, together for over 65 years. Also, passing before him were his father, Jack and mother, Elizabeth (nee Temple). His two brothers, Phil (Marg), Ted (Fran), and his 2 sisters, Trudy (Harry Gaylen), and Vi (Don McKray). As well as their great friends, Mary and Gord Herr.

Ken was born in Gouverneur, Sask and grew up primarily in Markinch, Sask, where he excelled scholastically (skipping grades) and in the realm of sports. Naturally gifted, he played baseball above his age group, travelling to many of the nearby towns by rail for games. Proficient also playing pool, ping pong, & tennis. His true passion though was golf, a sport he truly loved from an early age. Even as the years crept on, no longer able to physically enjoy those sports, he remained an avid sports fan following his many loves on TV.

Ken attended the University of Regina, receiving marks ranging from the high 90's to 100 in Physics and Math courses. His scholastic studies were interrupted when he joined the Canadian Armed Forces at the onset of World War Two, at the age of 19. He served honourably with the Royal Canadian Artillery in Britain, Italy, and North Africa until the end of the war, being discharged at the age of 24.

Ken worked as a surveyor for much of his life, with the Trans Canada Pipeline, Templeton Engineering, and the City of Winnipeg. He retired from the City of Winnipeg after 27 years in 1981, as Supervisor of Technical Services for St Boniface/St Vital.

Throughout his retirement, Ken enjoyed reading, going for walks, camping and travelling with his dear wife, Marg. They were blessed with relatively good health for most of their retirement years, and were able to share their lives with many friends and family.

Ken faced some very challenging health issues over the last few months. As always, he faced them courageously, with a positive attitude, never giving up. His mind sharp as a tack, his sense of humour with him throughout.

From the time Pa entered the hospital November 4, 2015, he received outstanding care. Our heartfelt thanks go to all of you who assisted him, cared for him, and showed him such compassion. From all the health care aides, all the nurses (who would come by just to say Hi, even when they were not his nurse that day.) And to all the Doctors who extended such admirable care for Dad, specifically Dr Abdulrehman, whose compassion and sense of humour helped us all. Bless each and every one of you. Your benevolence and happy, caring spirits are truly inspirational.

And a special thanks to all at Comforts of Homecare, who came to our rescue when we needed it most.

Dear Pops, such a kind, gentle, loving father and grandfather, whose generosity knew no bounds. How blessed were are to have shared your and Ma's life.

Rest in Peace.

Cremation has already taken place. In keeping with Ken's wishes, a private ceremony/interment was held Thursday, December 10, 2015.
