It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Ken Maxwell on April 24, 2023. He was 90 years old.
He will be lovingly remembered by his children: Sharon (Tim) Luchuck, Dave (Sandra), Ron, Shelley (Craig) Lamothe, and Bryon (Erin). Grandchildren: Ryan, Scott (Ashley), Kristen (Jordy) Mirwaldt, Kevin (Kayla), Kelsey (Robert), Carly, Sydney, and Emma. Great grandchildren: Paisley, Ella, Avery, Nora, and Owen. Survived by his brothers Noel (Violet), Ivan (Freda) and Vernon (Elsie) of Monaghan, Ireland and sisters Betty of Dollingstown, N. Ireland, Mavis (Jim) of Bangor, N. Ireland and Iris (Brian) of the Isle of Man, sisters-in-law Joan Maxwell of Monaghan, Ireland and Georgina Backman of Winnipeg and many nieces and nephews.
Dad was predeceased by his loving wife Joan in 2015, his parents Marcus and Margaret and his brothers Trevor and Meredith.
Dad was born on April 2, 1933 in Killnadrain, Co. Monaghan, Ireland. He immigrated to Canada in June 1953. He worked in Toronto and later in Thunder Bay where he met his beloved wife, Joan. They had 57 wonderful years together. In 1959, Dad was transferred to Winnipeg where they settled into Windsor Park to raise their family. Dad spent his working life in the grocery business. He was the proud owner of Parkette Grocery for 25 years, retiring in 1995.
During retirement, Dad enjoyed travelling with Mom. They visited family in Ireland, took trips to Hawaii and Texas and cruised to Alaska. While on a bus trip to the Maritimes, Mom and Dad were able to visit Pier 21 where Dad landed in Canada in 1953. We were lucky to accompany Dad on trips to Ireland in 2015 and 2018. So many special memories were made during those trips.
Dad started playing golf at the age of 72. He enjoyed curling and golfing, joining the men’s leagues. He also treasured his weekly golf games with his sons and sons-in-law.
Dad was a great husband, father, grandfather and friend. He had an outgoing, friendly personality and was the life of the party. Family was most important to Dad. He was the happiest with his family around, whether it was attending sports, watching any activities that his grandchildren were involved in or going to family birthday parties.
In July 2020, Dad moved into Devonshire House, where he enjoyed making new friends and participating in the many activities.
Dad was a very special person who had a positive outlook on life and a smile on his face. We are going to miss our nightly call from Dad.
