She was born to Hazel and Cy Holmes in National City on July 2, 1931. Her brother Cy Holmes was two years older. Her marriage to Milton Harvey in 1951 produced Bob and Darrell Harvey.
Her marriage to William 'Red' Smith in 1963 produced Carl Smith.
Her marriage to Don Johnson in 1968 produced Denise Johnson.
Her marriage to Frank Helm in 1986 produced great happiness.
Diane was a homemaker until the 1960s when she began a series of secretarial and administrative jobs. Her final occupation was as church secretary of First Congregational Church in National City, where she worshipped and sang in the choir for many years.

She was also a proud member of the Red Hat Club, her high school pals from the 40s who got together for lunch once a month.
