William C. "Al" Greer, Jr.

William C. "Al" Greer, of Nashville, TN, born in Detroit, MI, on October 22, 1922, spent his childhood years in Dickson, TN, passed away on January 21, 2017. He is preceded in passing by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Clifford Greer; brother, Richard Greer; brother-in-law, William W. Sug; and sister-in-lawn, Myrna Lou Greer "Puddy". He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia “Pat” Ann Greer; son, James Ronald Greer; granddaughter, Callie Michelle Greer Gammon (Whit); grandson, J.W. Greer; great-grandchildren, Greer Gammon, Webb Gammon, and Jace Greer; sister, Corrine Sugg; and brother, Gary Greer. Al was a graduate of Dickson Elementary School, Dickson High School, Geneva College, of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, and the University of Tennessee-Nashville. He also served in the United States Air Force as an Air Cadet – Pilot. In 1946, Al became an executive management associate with Herschel Greer and Guaranty Mortgage Company in 1946, serving within a one hundred mile radius of Davidson County. He was formerly employed by Home Federal Savings and Loan Association as Supervisor of Real Estate and Appraising. There he was a qualified Appraiser in all County, Federal and State Courts, and worked with area savings and loan associations, attorneys, estates, trusts, the State of Tennessee and Metropolitan Nashville In 1962, he formed the First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Waverly, Tennessee, as well as the First Federal Savings and Loan in Camden, Tennessee, serving as Chairman of the Board. The bank then merged with Liberty Federal of Paris, Tennessee, and later became Union Planters Bank serving on the Union Planter’s Board. Union Planters then merged with Regions Bank, from which he retired and took his wealth of experience to the west Tennessee Regions Bank Board of Directors. Al’s involvement with his community was impressive and his accomplishments were many: County Highway Commissioner for Davidson County prior to the inception of Metropolitan Government. Served as Governor Frank Clement’s Davidson County Campaign Manager. Was appointed to the Metropolitan Government Civil Service Commission by Mayor Beverly Briley,confirmed by the Metropolitan Council, and became acting Chairman. Appointed by Governor Frank Clement as one of “10 Men from Tennessee”; to travel to bring new industry to our city and the state of Tennessee. A former member of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce. Original Director of the Nashville Vols Baseball, 1959-63. Former member of the Nashville Kiwanis Club. Member of the Old Timer’s Baseball Club Founding member of the Nashville City Club Member of the Richland Country Club and 2006 Honoree for his contributions to the club and the game of golf. Al had boundless energy and enthusiasm for taking on endeavors that would grow his beloved Nashville; activities that promoted and supported its’ reputation as a progressive, vital city. A man of many interests, his passionate love for baseball was always evident as he attended spring training every year including the New York Yankees camp in Sarasota, Florida and the Boston Red Sox in Tampa. He has been a "Vol for life" and an annual ticket holder for decades, a member of the UT Athletic Fundraising Program and an avid wearer of orange along with his engaging smile. The single unifying force in Al Greer’s life – both professional and personal, was his genuine love and interest in every individual he came in contact with. When he looked you in the eye and asked, “How are you doing?” you knew he really meant it and wanted to hear all about your life. He gave 110% all the time, every day – from a conversation with an acquaintance to building his banking domain. An era passes as Al Greer joins his Maker; we are all enriched by having him in our life. Family and friends will gather at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 24, 2017, from five to eight o’clock in the evening for visitation and again on Wednesday, January 25, 2017, from ten-thirty to eleven thirty in the morning, followed by A Celebration of his Life at eleven-thirty also at the funeral home.
