Walter Eugene Sanders, "Gene," a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2024 at the age of 79. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories. Preceding him in death were his parents, Walter and Clarice Sanders, his brother, Michael Sanders, and his wife of 56 years, Cheryl Sanders.
Born on April 16, 1945, in Nashville, TN, Gene was a man of deep faith and strong values. His Christian beliefs guided him throughout his life, shaping his character and inspiring those around him. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Lebanon, TN. He graduated from Peabody Demonstration School in 1963. He was one of the owners of Sanders Manufacturing Company in Nashville.
Gene and Cheryl were high school sweethearts, whose love story spanned decades. Together, they built a life of joy and laughter, raising three wonderful sons: Barry (Jenny), Brian, and Chad. Their home was filled with love, laughter, and the warmth of family gatherings. Gene was a proud grandfather to Danielle Shaff (Chase), Ashley Lester (Evan), Tori Crague (Tyler), Abby Sanders, Preston Sanders, and Laelee Sanders, and a doting great-grandfather to Hadleigh, Hollynn, Haven, Madeline, Maggie, Lucas, and Lane. Gene was one of six children and is survived by his siblings: Owen (Jo), Betty Sue, Gail, and Ann as well as many nieces and nephews. Family was at the heart of Gene’s life, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
An avid golfer, Gene could often be found on the greens at Old Hickory Country Club, perfecting his swing and sharing camaraderie with fellow golfers. His passion for the sport was matched only by his love of travel. Gene and Cheryl explored the world together, creating countless memories and adventures.
Gene was also a dear friend to many, always ready with a kind word, a helping hand, or a warm smile. His presence in the lives of those who knew him was a true blessing, and his legacy of kindness and generosity will continue to inspire.
A celebration of Gene’s life will be held on Thursday, August 8, 2024 with visitation at 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 660 Thompson Ln, Nashville, TN 37204 with a celebration of life service following at 2:30 PM.
A graveside service will occur Thursday, August 8, 2024 at 3:30 PM at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 660 Thompson Ln, Nashville, TN 37204.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Children, reflecting Gene’s spirit of giving and his dedication as a Shriner.
Gene’s light shone brightly in the lives of those he touched, and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
