Born April 28th, 1945 in Miami, FL to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Loring Balch. Tim, along with his sister Pamela Balch Maes, grew up on each Coast with his parents eventually settling in Palo Alto/Pescadero, CA.
Timothy spent his high school years at Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, MA where he was a member of the Glee Club, a swimmer and played lacrosse. He carried both sports to the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill as a John Motley Morehead Scholar. He swam his freshman year and continued to play lacrosse all four years for the Tarheels while earning a double major Bachelors of Arts in English and Religion. His freshman year he met Linda Evans on a blind date and the rest is history.
Upon leaving UNC-CH, Tim joined the United States Marine Corps and became an Air Traffic Controller, even receiving the Air Traffic Controller of the Year in 1983. While on active duty, Tim and Linda lived in Southern California for a time before Tim went to Vietnam from 1969-1970. He became a reservist in 1971 when he and Linda pulled out a map, picked a city in the middle of the country and moved to Denver, CO.
In Denver, Tim’s civilian career started with Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Colorado and eventually physician relations at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Hospital. While living in Denver and then Englewood, Tim and Linda had two children, started their journey of involved parenting during weekends of sports and Tim even coached both kid’s soccer teams – having no real experience with soccer. Tim was very involved in life at Welshire Presbyterian Church where Tim became an Elder and taught Sunday School.
His USMC Reserve duty kept him connected to friends who would remain so for life and allowed him to continue serving the USMC for 24 more years. He retired in New Orleans in December of 1995.
Tim and Linda would eventually settle in Nashville, TN in 1998 with Tim working with a friend from Denver at Renal Care Group – that would eventually merge with Fresenius. Tim became an Elder at Westminster Presbyterian Church and has been active in Men’s Bible Study since the beginning. He also enjoyed his time on the Home Owners Association Board for West End. Both his job and six grandchildren would keep them on the move over the next 20 years in addition to their love of travel. Tim retired in 2014.
Timothy is predeceased in death by his parents, Richard and Patricia Balch. Timothy is survived by his wife Linda Evans Balch; his daughter and son-in-law Aubrey and Robin Maher of Fairfax Station, VA and their three daughters, Lindy, Aslynn and Lily; his son and daughter-in-law, Jon and Laura of Atlanta, GA and their three sons, Duskin, Harrison and Will; his sister and brother-in-law, Pam and Gary Maes of Kelseyville, CA; his sister-in-law Sue Powell of Wilson, NC; his brother-in-law Andrew and his wife Morgan Edwards of Orange County, CA; and multiple beloved nieces and nephews.
