Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, Luster Johnson and Mamie Elizabeth Johnson, sisters, Geraldine Johnson Huffine, Lois Johnson Pyrdum and brother Raymond Earl Johnson. He is survived by wife, Jearl Ann Johnson, sister, Dorothy Ann Goad of Clarksville as well as his son David Bruce Johnson, daughter-in-law Edith Carell Johnson and grandchildren Ann Scott Johnson and William Carell Johnson, all of Nashville.
A Nashville native, born on October 29, 1929, in Germantown, Bruce graduated from North High School in 1947. After serving in the Army in North Korea, Sergeant Johnson was honorably discharged in April 1955 and on October 15, 1955, married the love of his life, Jearl Ann Durham. They moved to Birmingham where Bruce attended Howard College (Samford University) studying Pharmacy, graduating in 1961. Moving back to Nashville, where Bruce started a long, happy and successful career as a pharmacist working with and serving his many clients and friends in the Nashville area. He enjoyed selling toys and greeting cards as much as medicine, believing that there are many ways to help people have a more pleasant and enjoyable life.
Bruce was an early member and an active, enthusiastic participant in all things related to Forest Hills Baptist Church. He particularly looked forward to every Friday morning, rising at 4:30 a.m. to get ready for the Friday Morning Men’s Bible Study Group. He enjoyed everything about his faith and his church, serving, among other duties, as Deacon, Sunday school teacher, greeter and all around cheerleader for everything related to Forest Hills Baptist Church and its mission.
Bruce loved his wife, his son, daughter-in-law, grandchildren and his life, which he lived to its fullest. Bruce was an avid hiker, enjoyed jazz, being a gentleman farmer, whisperer to animals and confidant to and proponent for his many friends. He saw the good in every situation and was always ready with a smile, a laugh, a word of encouragement. He will be missed, but he had a life well lived and left the world better than he found it. May we all be so lucky. Peace.
The family would like to thank the caring and attentive staff at The Blakeford and Alive Hospice. A private Graveside Service will take place on April 21, 2020.
In Lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Forest Hills Baptist Church, 2101 Old Hickory Blvd., Nashville, TN 37215, or to the charity of your choice.
