Sammie Nelson Finney was born in Winchester Tennessee, to Burton Patrick Finney and Carrie Elizabeth Finchum on November 3rd 1925.
In October 1943 Sammie joined the United States Navy and received training at Point Loma, San Diego, California as a Radarman and was subsequently assigned to the destroyer, the U.S.S. Leutze (DD-481). During this time, Sammie saw battle throughout the Pacific in World War II. Aboard his ship, he fought Naval Battles in Peleliu, Palau, Phillipines (Leyte Gulf, Lingayen Gulf, Luzon), Iwo Jima, Surigao Straits, Okinawa Japan. After WWII ended, Sammie was honorably discharged in December 1945, attaining the rank of Radarman 3rd Class.
He promptly went to work at Warren Paint Company in Nashville, Tennessee, where, he worked and toiled for 67 years. During this time, he met Mary Margaret Jones and they were united in marriage in March 1950, Barely a year later in April 1951, their son, Douglas Nelson Finney was born. Later in life Sammie re-married in September 1969, Sammie married Anna Kimbro Payne, whom he remained married to until her death in 2004. Sammie loved collecting and sorting coins, working and growing a garden, singing at church, spending time with his grandchildren, and loving his family.
Sammie passed away on November 22, 2022. He leaves behind a large family that dearly loves him.
He was preceded in death by his wives: Mary Margaret Jones, Ann Finney. father Patrick Finney and mother Carrie Finchum, brothers: Thomas Burton, Alex Louis, Elma, Johnny Dossett. Sisters: Ester Mae, Betty Marie, Edna Lois, Velma Jean, Mary Lou, Dorothy Jean. Daughters: Janet Payne Sullivan, Jane Payne Tilley.
He is survived by children: Douglas Finney (Robbie), Julie Payne Stanhope (Jerry Johnson), Ronald Payne (Cindy). Grandchildren: Dawn Bragg, Richard Beaty (Keiko), Misty Gauchat (Will), Stephen Smith, Daniel Beaty (Tabitha), Heather Marks, Brandon Smith, Ashley Roman (Raul) Douglas Finney Jr (Lindsay). Great-Grandchildren: Justin Bragg (Morgan), Aubree Gauchat, Hayley Bragg, Keila Beaty, Ronnie Mac Payne, Daniel Beaty II, Emily Beaty, Katie Jungers, Kristin Jungers, Alyssa Jones, Caden Jones, Brantley Smith, Presley Smith, Ariya Roman, Jensen Finney. 2x-Great Grandchildren: Zander Bragg, Blaine Bragg, Zayden Beaty, Daniel Beaty III.
A gathering of family and friends for Sammie will be held Sunday, November 27, 2022 from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM and on Monday from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home. A Celebration of life service will occur Monday, November 28, 2022 at 10:00 AM in Woodlawn's Dignity Hall with entombment will follow.
