Peggy Campbell Steele

STEELE, Peggy Campbell, born in Nashville, Tennessee on April 13, 1951 and passed away peacefully in Nashville on June 29, 2020 at the age of 69. Peggy was a loving and caring wife and mother and treasured her role as "Sugar" to her grandchildren. Peggy was an avid lover of animals and nature. She treasured her early morning walks at her farm "Belle Camp" and made every attempt to identify each wildflower on the property. She was steward to all of the deer, birds (especially her favorite owls Hooty and Tooty) and other wildlife at her home in West Nashville. Peggy was deeply spiritual and sought to expand her knowledge and understanding of the mind, body and soul so that she could discover her true path in life and help others do the same. She was a graduate of Harpeth Hall Academy and attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville where she graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. degree in Education. Peggy was the granddaughter of Howell Hooper Campbell, who started Standard Candy Company and created the Goo Goo Cluster candy bar, a quintessential southern delight and long-time sponsor of Nashville's Grand Old Opry.

Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, James DeWitt Carter Steele and her parents, Howell Hooper Campbell, Jr. and Edith Bilbra Campbell. She is survived by her two children, Campbell Carter Steele and James Nathan Steele (Amy); her two grandchildren, Marco Luis Steele and Anna Mae Steele; her brother and sister Howell Hooper Campbell, III (Susan) and Edie Campbell Mitchell (Bill), as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and other family members.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11am on Monday, July 6, 2020 in the Mount Olivet Cemetery. As a precaution, only close family members will be permitted to attend due to the COVID-19 virus. However, friends can honor her memory by contributing to non-profit organizations that she strongly supported. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Guardianship and Trusts Corporation, 95 White Bridge Road, Suite 330, Nashville, TN 37205, The Little Pantry That Could, 2011 24th Avenue N., Nashville, TN 37208, or to another charity of one's choice.
