With profound respect for his extraordinary life, the family of Dr. Michael Christopher Reed, age 62, of Nashville, Tennessee, shares that he passed peacefully in his sleep on April 28th, 2021. He was known as Dr. Reed to many, Mike to friends, Uncle Michael to extended family, and Dad to his children. Those privileged to know him remember his wild imagination, deeply compassionate heart, brilliant mind, quick humor, love of nature, incomparable work ethic, and heartfelt dedication to his patients.
Michael was born on August 15th, 1958 in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Dr. Warren Gilmer Reed and Joan Meighan Reed, the fifth of six children in a large Catholic family. He married his high school sweetheart, Elaine Miles, on June 7th, 1980, and together they raised three children, which he considered to be the greatest joy and accomplishment of his life.
Michael graduated magna cum laude from the University of Tennessee with a degree in zoology and received his medical degree from the James Quillen College of Medicine, where he was a charter member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He completed his psychiatry residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and was humbled to become a recipient of the prestigious Marc Hollander Award. He has since dedicated over 30 years to caring for his patients in private practice in Nashville.
He will be forever cherished by his wife of forty years, Elaine Miles Reed, and their children, Hannah Elaine Reed, Emily Elizabeth Reed, and Matthew Michael Reed (Grace Murray Reed). He is also survived by his sisters, Joann Reed Koch (godmother to his children) and Eleanor Gilmer Reed, and his brother, Joseph Whitmel Reed. He is preceded in death by both parents as well as his brother, Warren Gilmore Reed II, and his sister, Rebecca Marie Reed. Michael is also celebrated by the Miles family who loved him as much as he loved them. On behalf of Michael, the family extends his mantra of strength and honor.
A memorial service will be held at West End United Methodist Church on May 8th, 2021 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Aphasia Group of Middle Tennessee, the American Cancer Society, or Friends of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
