Mary Glenn Hearne passed away peacefully on October 26, 2021 at the age of 93. A wonderful mother and friend, she will be greatly missed. Born in Athens, Alabama in 1927, she led a life full of strength, bravery and adventure, overcoming challenges and with wisdom and perseverance. She earned the respect and love of many, including family, friends and students.
She is proceeded in death by her parents Paul Mason and Dezzie Lee Mason of Athens, AL, her husband Jesse C. Hearne of Malvern, PA, niece Kathy Hearne of Nashville, TN, and her sister Charlotte Ann Shetter of Tullahoma, TN.
She is survived by her daughter Mary Lynne Campbell (husband Don) and their daughter Lindsey Nicole Campbell of Atlanta, GA, in addition to her daughter Lee Ann Hearne of Dallas, TX. She is also survived by niece Tricia Peck (Dave) of Brentwood, TN, nephew Paul Shetter of Las Vegas, NV, and niece Pam Shetter of Brentwood, TN, in addition to her nephews Gary Hearne (Anne Brittenum) of Eureka Springs, AR, Greg Hearne (Sheila) of McLean, VA, and Jeff Hearne (Wendy) of Maumelle, AR.
Mary Glenn held two Masters degrees - one in History from the University of Alabama and the other in Library Science from Peabody College (now Vanderbilt University). She initially taught History at Lipscomb University and attended summer school at Harvard University before women were allowed to attend during the school year. While in summer school, she met her husband Jesse, who was studying for his PhD at Harvard. They married and moved to Malvern, PA, where Jesse was a dean at a private boarding school for boys. They had two children and enjoyed seven years together before Jesse passed away. The family moved back to Nashville where she worked at the Metro Public Library for 30 years as Director of The Nashville Room, providing research and local history to authors and residents alike, while serving on numerous local and national library associations.
She was an adventurer and enjoyed traveling with family and friends to many destinations, especially Europe. She was generous, funny, curious and kind, and she especially loved her only grandchild, Lindsey.
