Dr. Humphreys was born in Murray, KY on July 23, 1938 to Thomas and Zula Walker Humphreys.
Throughout school, he dedicated himself to his education and higher learning. He graduated Vanderbilt School of Medicine with a medical doctorate in 1962.
Dr. Humphreys served as Chief Pathologist of Summit Hospital for 40 years. During the same years, he oversaw his Pathologist Laboratory, Inc. Doctor Group in their dedicated work.
In 1971, Dr. Humphreys and Dean Del Sawyer of Vanderbilt Blair School of Music, merged the Doctors and Lawyers Band to form The Establishment Big Band Orchestra. Monies paid for performances by those AFM Musicians were donated to scholarship funds at Blair School of Music and the W.O. Smith Community School.
Dr. Humphreys is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Susan Ladd-Smith Humphreys. Jerry and Susan's racing stable produced dozens of Thoroughbred Race horses for decades. They were honored as Tennessee Thoroughbred owners and Breeders several years in The Thoroughbred Times Magazine.
Surviving children include, Gary Luke Smith, Jerry K. Humphreys Jr., Thomas S. Humphreys and Martha (Humphreys) Lott; Grandchildren, Catherine Humphreys, Mark Elliott Humphreys, Crawford Humphreys, James "Artie" Humphreys, Baillie (Lott) Whitlow and Dylan Lott.
In lieu of flowers, family requests memorial donations be made in Dr. Jerry Kay Humphreys Sr. name to Vanderbilt Blair School of Music and W.O. Smith Community School.
Hors D'oeuvres will be served for Family and Friends in The Music City Suite Wednesday, December 27, 2023 from 1:30 PM to 2:15 PM. The Celebration of Life Service will follow beginning at 2:30 PM in Dignity Hall all at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 660 Thompson Lane Nashville, TN 37204.
