Jean S. Diehl

DIEHL, Jean Elizabeth Sherrill-Age 81, passed away September 1, 2010. Mrs. Diehl was born January 23, 1929 in Lincoln County Tennessee, in a small town called Delrose. She graduated in 1946 from George Peabody Demonstration School and continued her education at Steven's College in Columbia Missouri where she graduated in 1948. In 1949 she meet Jack Baker Diehl on a blind date arranged by a co-worker. They fell in love and married the same year. Jean has had many personal accomplishments over the years. In 1986 she was accepted by the Nation Park Service to be on future display at the Liberty Island Museum, in the poetry section, adjoining the Statue of Liberty with a poem she wrote named "Queen of Freedom''. President Clinton was presented with a copy of the poem which he accepted as a personal gift. The poem was also published July 4,1986 during the period of restoration of the Statue of Liberty by the Nashville Banner. In l99l she was also selected as a Golden Poet by the "World of Poetry” organization for the "The Glorious Seasons" poem. Mrs. Diehl is survived by her loving husband Jack Baker Diehl; sons, Thomas Baker Diehl; Howard McCoy Diehl; Allen Gibson Diehl; grandchildren, Hanley Baker Diehl, Luke Diehl, Anna Diehl, and great-grandson, Chase Baker Diehl. Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 3, 2010 at Hillwood Presbyterian Church, 6220 Hickory Valley Road, Nashville, TN with Rev. Dr. Rik Rouquie officiating. Burial to follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers include: Luke Diehl, Hanley Diehl, Aaron Thomason, Kenny Diehl, Walter Crawford and Leon Strauss. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hillwood Presbyterian Church or Alive Hospice. Visitation with the family will be held Thursday from 3-7 p.m. at Woodlawn and on Friday from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service at the Hillwood Presbyterian Church. Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton. (615)383-4754.
