Born April 9, 1943 in Flushing, New York, Jim spent his early, formative years in Leonia, New Jersey and his summers near Tuscaloosa, Alabama where his lifelong love of the University of Alabama’s Crimson Tide football began. He always pulled for the SEC, but was a Bear Bryant / Gene Stallings follower and supporter all his life. He graduated from Douglas County High School in Douglasville, GA in 1961 where he lettered in football and basketball. Great friendships were formed and treasured. Jim graduated from David Lipscomb College with a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry in 1966. After teaching and doing some post-graduate work at Georgia State University, he married his college sweetheart (his “Eliza” to his 1965 “Higgins” in My Fair Lady) Necie Julianna Olsen “Julie” from Pensacola/Gulf Breeze, Florida in the summer of 1968. Jim’s life work was with Cracker Asphalt which became Young Refining Corporation in 1971. He served through the years as the company’s chemist, sales man of jet fuel, roofing and paving asphalt, futures trader, crude oil procurer and executive vice-president until YRC’s demise in 2004. During Jim’s career, he served both American Petroleum Refiners of America (APRA) and Independent Refiners Association of America (IRAA) as both President and Director.
During the Regan administration, Jim was called upon as a representative from the independent small refiners to give testimony to the United States House of Representatives and the Senate as an expert consultant. Jim also served the Douglasville church of Christ as Bible teacher for the teens, Deacon, and Elder. He also participated in the chorus as an avid member of the bass section and a member of the Budget committee. He and Julie enjoyed their married years entertaining church youth groups, visiting ministers and missionaries, and singing groups in their home where Jim’s marinated steak recipe was often requested and served. He enjoyed the church softball league and a pickup game of basketball after church.
Jim’s community involvement extended to the state level where he served as President of the Suppliers to the Georgia Roofers Association and as a Leadership Georgia graduate in the mid 1980’s.
Although for many years Jim’s job had him traveling 4-5 days a week, he was an ardent supporter of his children in their Woodward Academy athletics, music, and drama performances. He also found time to tutor Douglas County third graders that had learning challenges.
Jim served as a charter member of the Lipscomb University’s Development Board. He was a fervent supporter of Christian education. Not only did he meet Julie at Nashville’s David Lipscomb College in the 1960’s, but both Necie Elizabeth and Josh graduated from the now Lipscomb University.
Just as their story began in Nashville, their children set up “house keeping” there and so as loving ailing parents and doting grandparents Julie and Jim were drawn back. The last few years were enjoyed reviving old memories, making new precious ones with family and dear friends. “Blessed be the tie that binds...”
