Command Chief Warrant Officer Five James Sidney (Sid) Doty was born in Nashville on May 24, 1943. He attended Julia Green Elementary, Stokes Elementary School and graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1961. He was a proud member of the Boy Scouts and attained the rank of Eagle Scout while in high school. After he attended Tennessee Tech College, he enlisted in the military and served honorably for 37 years. He has been a member of Christ the King Catholic Church for more than 50 years and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Sid was a proud member of the Tennessee State Scholastic Athletic Association (TSSAA) refereeing high school football and basketball for over 50 years.
During the course of his distinguished military career, Chief Doty enlisted in the Army in September 1965 and attended Basic and AIT at Fort Jackson, SC. As an enlisted soldier he served on active duty at Fort Belvoir, Vietnam and the Pentagon. After release from active duty he immediately joined the US Army Reserve’s, 223rd Military Intelligence Detachment in Riverdale, MD. Chief Doty later joined the 290th Military Police Brigade, Nashville, TN serving as the PSNCO and Brigade Intelligence NCO. He was appointed WO1 in May 1978 and served as Chief, Personnel Actions Branch, 678th Personnel Service Company. He was reassigned to the 401st Military Police Camp (PW) as the Counter-Intelligence Officer. Chief Doty subsequently was transferred to Headquarters, 125th Army Reserve Command as the Counter-Intelligence Officer. Chief Doty was deployed three times; OPERATION DESERT STORM / DESERT SHIELD serving as Counter Intelligence Officer with the 401st Military Police (PW) Camp in Saudi Arabia, OPERATION JOINT ENDEAVER as S-2 for the 2145th Mobilization Troop Command, Fort Benning, GA and OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM as Counter Intelligence Officer with 325th Military Intelligence Battalion, 205th MI Brigade, Iraq.
CW5 Doty’s assignments as a Senior Warrant Officer included: Senior Counter-Intelligence Officer, 311th Corps Support Command, Los Angeles, CA; Intelligence Officer, 2145th U.S. Army Garrison; and Intelligence Officer, Headquarters, 125th Army Reserve Command both in Nashville, TN. On October 1, 2001 Chief Doty became the first Command Chief Warrant Officer in the history of 81st Regional Readiness Command, Birmingham, AL.
Chief Doty’s awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (with three Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal (with Silver Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Achievement Medal (with two Oak Leaf Clusters), Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (with Silver Oak Leaf Cluster), National Defense Service Medal (with two Bronze Stars), Armed Forces Reserve Medal (with “M” & “3” Device and Gold Hour Glass), Superior Civilian Service Award, and Civilian Service Achievement Medal.
Chief Doty was an active Life Member of the Reserve Officers Association – serving in multiple positions during his tenure, Warrant Officers Association, the Military Officers Association of America, the Association of the United States Army, member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War.
Command Chief Warrant Officer Five James Sidney (Sid) Doty retired from the US Army on May 31, 2004 after 37 years of active and reserve service.
After he retired from the military, Sid worked at the Nashville Zoo for 8 years and traveled with his wife and family. He was a devoted loving husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed going to the Titans football games and being outdoors.
Chief Doty was preceded in death by his parents, James Forrest and Thelma Chadwell Doty; and brother and his wife, Phillip and Dolores Doty.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Ann M Doty; daughters Beth (Lance) Long and Karen (Brett) Fairfax; granddaughters Hope, Macie and Sydney Long and Hunter Grace and Madison Fairfax; brother G Howard Doty and many nieces and nephews.
A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held from four until seven in the evening on Thursday, April 22, 2021 at Marshall-Donnelly Combs Funeral Home
A Funeral Mass will be held at eleven o'clock in the morning on Friday, April 23 at Christ the King Catholic Church, 3001 Belmont Blvd, Nashville, TN 37212 with Interment to immediately follow in Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
