James Milton Denton III

James Milton Denton, III, lovingly known as “Yogi” to friends and family, passed away peacefully at the age of 88. Born on December 24, 1935, in Macon, GA, Jimmy was the cherished son of Mrs. Frank Shumate Denton and James Milton Denton, Jr., who predeceased him.

Jimmy leaves behind his beloved wife of 66 years, Berenice Miller Denton, whose unwavering love and support was the bedrock of their life together. He is also survived by their four devoted children: Debbie Denton Folk (Michael) of Memphis, TN, Kathy Denton Stumb (Tom), Julie Denton Petro (Mark) of Birmingham, AL, and James M. Denton, IV (Liesl). He was a proud grandfather to 13 grandchildren: Catherine Folk Dowdle (Clint), Miller Folk, Elizabeth Folk Campbell (Jack), Michael Folk (Carly), Tee Stumb (Bette), Grace Stumb, Mary Denton Stumb McFadden (Will), Katy Stumb, Jake Stumb, Carlee Petro, Allee Petro, LeeLee Denton, and Jamie Denton. Jimmy also delighted in the joy of his five great-grandchildren: Denton Dowdle, McKenna Dowdle, Wells Dowdle, Scottie Folk, and Poppy Stumb. He is further survived by brothers-in-law Jimmy Miller and Mike McNally, along with several nieces, nephews and cousins who all held a special place in his heart.

Jimmy's life was a testament to dedication and service. A standout student and athlete at Shades Valley High School in Birmingham, he graduated in 1954 as a member of the Honor Society, Captain of the Football Team, and the Outstanding Student. His academic journey continued at Vanderbilt University, where he was an Honor Society member, engaged in the Student Christian Association, competed in wrestling, and was a proud member of the SAE fraternity. His commitment to service led him to the Marine Corps and later a distinguished career in banking.

Jimmy began his banking career at Commerce Union Bank, where his leadership and vision soon set him on a path to prominence. He was later named President and CEO of Hamilton Bank in Chattanooga and Nashville, a role in which he made significant contributions to the growth and success of the institution. After his successful banking career, he transitioned into the insurance field with Willis Corroon and Fridrich & Associates, where he continued to apply his expertise and dedication. In the 80s and 90s, he partnered in the airport Hilton Hotel, the site of many memorable family events.

Beyond his professional achievements, Jimmy was deeply involved in Nashville’s community. His passion for service was evident through his roles with the Nashville Airport Authority, Nashville Chamber of Commerce, Girl Scouts, The Better Business Bureau, The Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, The Nashville Vanderbilt Club, and The National Commodore Club. He served on the boards of Men of Valor, The Martha O’Bryan Foundation, YMCA Camp Widjiwagan, The American Red Cross, and The Washington Foundation. He was a member of The Cumberland Club, The Exchange Club, and Belle Meade Country Club.

Jimmy’s faith was the cornerstone of his life. He served as both deacon and elder at Westminster Presbyterian and First Presbyterian Churches, finding great joy in teaching Sunday School and guiding confirmation students.

His passions included tennis, golf, bridge, duck hunting, and cheering on Vanderbilt sports, but none compared to his profound love for God, his family, and his friends.

The visitation will be held on Saturday, July 27th, at 10:00 am in Courtenay Hall of First Presbyterian Church, 4815 Franklin Pike, Nashville with the funeral service to follow in the sanctuary at 11:30.
