Herbert Kenneth “Ken” Biddy was born August 7, 1940 in Woodstock, GA to Louise McCollum Biddy and George Biddy (now deceased). He was a brother to 5 siblings – Dwight, Weyman, Hoyt, Larry and Klevin Biddy. I can’t imagine him as a boy, but I bet they got into some trouble.
In the last five years of his life, he was plagued with cancer diagnosis and finally congestive heart failure. Lesser men might have succumbed to the illness but the “energizing Ken Biddy” who had a zeal to live survived almost three years amazing his doctors, family, and friends.
Growing up in the Woodstock, Georgia area, in his early years he worked as a bouncer, a rock-a-billy artist manager, and carpet layer, before holding down jobs at Lockheed and Ken Stanton Music. His oldest daughter, Crystal Milligan was born when he was barely 23 years old. Marrying twice, the first time to Linda Poore, he had a daughter, Dena Biddy Bryant, and a son, Daniel Biddy. His second wife, Carol Granger, gave him his youngest daughter, Amanda Biddy.
It was his love of music that would cause him to move to Nashville in 1983. It was here that he and his partners, Jimmy Long and Myron Cantrell would form Copperfield Music Group signing the legendary Chuck Wagon Gang when they were released from their Columbia Records contract. During their years with Copperfield, they would win the TNN/Music City News Award for Country Gospel Group of the Year on four occasions – a fact he was extremely proud of.
In July of 1991, he met his third wife (yes, #3 and final), Shelia Shipley Biddy, while having drinks at Sunset Grill. Introduced by Shelia’s best friend and personal assistant, Lori Evans, they would have their first date one week later. That one date would lead to a marriage proposal three months with them marrying within 7 months in February 1992. In that marriage, Ken would gain a step-son, Michael Shipley. That union would bless them with 6 grandchildren, Wesley, Seth, Griffin, Lola, Kyle & Kaleb. They spent 32 years together as husband and wife until his death in 2024.
Ken was known as a tough business negotiator and expanded his business into the country field by securing country cuts by Montgomery Gentry, Leeann Womack, LeAnn Rimes, Jeff Carson, Kenny Rogers, and others. Songs from his catalog appeared in film and tv during on multiple occasions. He loved songwriting and nurtured songwriters helping them to develop and hone their craft.
He was funny, tough, stubborn, and quick to judge. He didn’t learn to say “I’m sorry” until late in life but his heart could love with a capacity that most never know. He loved to “fix things” and insisted on tinkering with small engines, refrigerators, broken toasters, irons, and anything else that would challenge him. He loved Hellman’s mayonnaise. He’d eat it on everything and especially loved mayo sandwiches. He had a gift of doing for others and often surprised them with gifts when they least expected them. When he became ill, he would ask his wife over and over again - “are you my baby?” to which she would reply “I am. Forever, and Ever Amen.” He will be missed.
