August 18, 1925 – November 10, 2017
Helen Lucy Lamberti was born on August 18th, 1925 in Yonkers, NY. She was a classic “Depression Child”, who grew up in impoverished conditions. After graduating from high school, she worked in the defense plants, while World War II was raging. As the war was drawing to a close, she met a young sailor named Glenn Sneed. Glenn’s destroyer had been torpedoed in the Atlantic.
While the ship was undergoing repairs in New York Harbor, Helen and Glenn fell in love and married on September 1st, 1945. Soon after, they moved to Tennessee and settled in the outskirts of Nashville, Glenn’s hometown. Sadly, in May of 1965, while working in the grocery store he managed, Glenn died suddenly from a stroke. Glenn’s death left the care of five children, ages 18-3, in Helen’s hands.
She began working in the cafeteria, of a local Catholic school, to provide for her children’s early education. Helen was later called to share her motherly gifts with other children, as a day care worker. Through these years, “Miss Helen” touched so many lives!
She was again reminded of the fragility of life, when she lost her second born child, son Roger, at age 50. Helen once again picked herself up and persevered, for her family.
She was always very health conscious. Before caring for children, at the Donelson YMCA, she would exercise every day. Though, never without perfect hair and makeup! It was her inner beauty, however, that was one of a kind!
Upon retiring from the daycare, she continued to frequent the Y, as her visits became less physical and more social. She had so many friends and was a friend to so many! Her children were her life and she theirs’. Helen was age 70 before her first plane flight and, from that point on, was well traveled due to many wonderful family vacations.
She lived in the same home, that she and her husband built, for all her adult life. It was there, in the comfort of her home, that God gracefully and peacefully reunited her with her husband and son.
Helen is survived by her sons Glenn (Nancy), Rick (Lynna), Mark (Janice), daughter Barbara, as well as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Though she may be gone from her family’s sight, she will be forever in their hearts, until they meet again!
The family will receive friends between 2:00 and 4:00pm on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 for a Celebration of Life Memorial at Hibbett & Hailey Funeral Home, 429 Donelson Pike, Nashville, TN 37214. (615) 883-2361.
