Emily Martin Duncan, 74, went to be with the Lord on August 10, 2013, after a long and courageous battle with leukemia. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert E. Martin and Margaret G. Martin. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Richard D. Duncan, Jr.; three children, Richard D. Duncan, III (Stephanie) of Chapel Hill, NC, William M. Duncan of Nashville, and Meg Duncan Bristow (John) of Richmond, VA; five grandchildren, Carter, Decker, and Walker Bristow, Katie Grace and Sarah Martin Duncan; one brother, Robert E. Martin (Eva Jane) of Mobile, AL; and four nieces and nephews. Emily was a lifelong resident of Nashville. She attended Peabody Demonstration School and graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1961. Through her nineteen-year teaching career with Metro Nashville Public Schools, she touched the lives of countless children and provided a positive influence for her students. Emily was very dedicated to her church community where she volunteered frequently and served as a deacon and long-time acolyte coordinator. She treasured the friendships made through her involvement in various church groups, including Sit & Stitch, Book Club, CWF Circles, and her Sunday School classes. She was a devoted and caring mother, grandmother, and wife. Emily enjoyed nature and spent many hours outside tending to her gardens and caring for the wildlife in her yard. The family would like to thank the physicians, nurses, and staff at Vanderbilt University Medical Center for their devoted and compassionate care over the past five years. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 14, at Woodmont Christian Church, 3601 Hillsboro Road, Nashville. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, August 15, at Woodmont Christian Church. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Memorial Fund of Woodmont Christian Church.
