August 31, 1955 - August 23, 2022
David Harper “Dave” Mullendore, age 66, died at home in Nashville, TN on August 23, 2022 after a three-year battle with ocular melanoma. His positive spirit, outgoing personality, and desire to be helpful touched everyone that he encountered. He will be greatly missed.
Dave was born in Charleston, WV on August 31, 1955 to John Ames and Dorothea Simpson Mullendore, and was the youngest of their three children. His father’s career took Dave and his family to Anniston, AL when he was a baby, and then to St. Louis, MO where he began his education. There, he attended St. Louis Country Day School, where he developed a love for team sports, especially soccer.
In 1972, Dave and his family moved to Nashville, TN where he attended Montgomery Bell Academy. While at MBA, Dave swam, played football, and played on the school’s first varsity soccer team. He attended Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, where he obtained a degree in Economics and Management in 1978. At Centre, Dave was on the newly formed varsity soccer team, a member of Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity, and president of the Interfraternity Council.
After college, Dave returned to Nashville and began his banking career at Third National Bank. Banking came naturally to Dave. His great grandfather, David L. Mullendore, was a rancher turned banker in Oklahoma and Kansas, providing federal credit and production support to farmers in four states following the Great Depression. Dave’s grandfather, C.H. Mullendore, Sr. was also a banker in Oklahoma. Service to the community through banking was in Dave’s genes.
For over 40 years, Dave worked for several financial institutions in Nashville, building a reputation as an experienced commercial lender and dedicated advisor to his clients. He attended the Stonier School of Banking in Newark, DE, completing the program in 1992. He ended his career at Fourth Capital Bank (formerly Tennessee Bank and Trust). One of Dave’s greatest joys was helping his clients and coworkers while at that bank.
Outside of work, Dave was a devoted husband and father, frequently volunteering at his son’s schools, Harding Academy and University School of Nashville. He was an active member of West End United Methodist Church, serving on the advisory board. He was a Mason, 32nd degree Scottish Rite, and Shriner (Al Menah Shrine Temple). He was a United Way Loan Executive for ten years and a board member of Nashville State Community College and the Sequoia Swim Club.
Dave took a special interest in the Boy Scouts of America as his son began his scouting career. Over several years, Dave served as Cub Scout Den Leader at Pack 78 in West Nashville, and later as a Troop Leader, Assistant Scoutmaster and Merit Badge Instructor for Boy Scout Troop 31 at St. George’s Episcopal Church. He also served on Eagle Scout Boards of Review to approve candidates for Eagle rank upon completing their requirements. He was a member of the Executive Board for the Middle TN Council and a member of the Council's Commissioner Staff. Dave served as a Commissioner and Chairman for the James E. West District, providing guidance for dozens of Scouting units throughout the region. In addition to volunteering, Dave enjoyed biking, hiking, camping and traveling with his family.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Anne Simpson Mullendore Tufano. He is survived by his loving wife, Karen Pannell Mullendore; his son John Winston Ames Mullendore and his sister Jane Ames Mullendore Wilson (Creede) of Marietta, GA. He is also survived by his father’s wife, Annette Ripper Mullendore of Sugar Land, TX. Dave’s nieces are Amanda Simpson Tufano (Laura) of Minneapolis, MN; Julia Ames Tufano of Austin, TX; Lowrey Wilson Elder (Tyler) of Roswell, GA and Brittany Pannell Temples (Travis) of Cookeville, TN. His nephews are Bennett Lee Wilson (Kasey) of Woodstock, GA and Charles Tyler Pannell of Huntsville, AL. Dave is also survived by eight great nieces and great nephews.
A memorial service will be held at West End United Methodist Church at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 10, 2022. Visitation with the family will precede the service at 10:00 a.m.
