Barbara Fleming Jones was born in Columbia, Tennessee on August 30, 1934 and died in Nashville, Tennessee on December 13, 2021 after battling cancer. She was the daughter of Luther Thomas Fleming and Lottie Stipe Fleming. She was preceded in death by her husbands, William L. Jones and Thomas S. Jones.
Barbara and William grew up on the same street and were high school sweethearts. In high school she excelled in her studies and was crowned Mule Day Queen, a tradition in Columbia for over 170 years.
Following high school, she attended George Peabody College for Teachers (now a part of Vanderbilt University) on a scholarship. During her last year of college, she married William and they had two children, William Lester Jones, Jr. (Les) and Sherry Frances Jones. She had a long and decorated teaching career in Cookeville and Nashville, Tennessee that spanned over 40 years.
After marrying her second husband Tom, they moved to Nashville and became heavily involved in the RCIA program at St. Henry's Catholic Church. It was during these years that she spent most of her free time with her children and their spouses, Les and Leah Jones , Sherry and Pat Terry , and her beloved grandchildren, Patrick and Anna Terry and Eleanor and Townes Jones.
It is impossible to put into words the outwardly love and affection she displayed to her family and friends. It was a family joke that she would be the first angel in heaven to be awarded a phone. Anyone who knew her children quickly became aware that she called them multiple times a day. She was an avid reader, loved the beach and going on family vacations. In her later years, she enjoyed sitting outside with her wonderful friends at the Cloister.
She is also survived by her brother and sister in law, Tom and Judy Fleming.
Visitation will be at St. Henry's Catholic Church on December 21, 2021 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. with a funeral mass to follow at 11:00. There will be a private burial at Middle Tennessee State Cemetery following.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
