She was born June 29, 1942 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL to Dr. Carl and Mrs.
Christine Gericke. She received her undergraduate degree from Florida
Presbyterian College (now Eckerd College), and an M.A.T., M.A., and
Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University. Alice taught Spanish at Montgomery
Bell Academy for 28 years, retiring in 2008. During her tenure at MBA,
Alice served numerous years as Chair of the Foreign Language Department,
head of the Service Club, class sponsor, and trusted advisor to many
students and colleagues. In 2004, she was honored with the Teacher of
the Year Award by the TFLTA. She was the author of three books on
Advanced Placement testing for Spanish Language and Literature,
including the Barron’s AP Spanish Guide. Through her life-long
commitment to learning and service, Alice transformed the lives of not
just her students, but all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, John Springer; son Jonathan,
grandsons Will and Julian; son Thomas, his wife Cristina, grandchildren
Eva and Marc; brother Albert Gericke, his wife Pat; sister Grace Moran,
her husband Kurt Merkling; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is
preceded in death by her parents and son Christopher Louis Springer.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 21 at 11:00 am at Second
Presbyterian Church in Nashville. In lieu of flowers, the family
requests that donations be made to the Vanderbilt University Medical
Center in memory Alice G. Springer, or to the charity of your choice.
