SMITH, Adele deRaismes Youngberg, age 100, of Nashville, died Sunday, April 15, 2012, and was preceded in death by her father, General Gilbert A. Youngberg, U S Army, and mother, Adele Harriette deRaismes, a brother, Bert Youngberg, a sister, Helen Youngberg Richheimer, and by her husband, Fleming Wood Smith, who died in 1979, after 45 years of marriage.
She is survived by two sons, Fleming Wood Smith, Jr. (Judy ) and Gilbert Naylor Smith (Mary Jane ), both of Nashville, and a beloved niece, Adele Richheimer Harwell (Tom), of Greenville, NC, seven grandchildren, Fleming W. Smith, III (Sonya), Jennifer Smith Farley (Tim), Allison Smith Blandford (Greg), Gilbert Naylor Smith, Jr., Mary deRaismes Hinckley (Jim), Melissa Martin Smith (Edwin Williamson), Caroline Jeanette Smith (Josh Mixon) and 15 great grandchildren, Will, Ben and Kate Farley, Fleming IV, Sherridon and Ashton Smith, Chelsea and Chase Pearson, Reid and Taylor Blandford, Grace and Emma Hinckley, Ted, Van and Gilbert Williamson.
Born at the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY, Adele was raised as a child of a military officer, and became a resident of Jacksonville, FL, as her father retired and was head of the Florida District of the Corps of Engineers. She graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1934, was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority, married her husband, and has been a resident of Nashville ever since.
Adele was an avid painter, always giving her landscape art to be auctioned by local charities and an avid gardener. Her home was always the gathering place for her children’s afterschool play. She was a Gray Lady at Thayer Hospital during World War II, while her husband was in the Pacific with the U S Navy. Adele was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Wayside Garden Club, the Centennial Club, the Ladies Hermitage Association, and served on the Vestry of St. George Episcopal Church.
Services will be held at St. George Episcopal Church, 4715 Harding Road, at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, April 18, 2012. Visitation with the Family will be held during the hour before the service at St. George’s.
