The family moved to Lockport, New York and John attended Lockport Senior High School. He graduated with a B.A. in government in 1966 from Centre College. While at Centre, John was a member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. John was awarded his J.D. in 1969 from The University of Virginia School of Law.
John served in the Army after graduation from law school by working as a VISTA attorney for the Zuni Indian Nation. In 1972, he started his legal career with the New York City Wall Street law firm of Brown & Wood, later Sidley Austin, where he had a distinguished career in the corporate and securities practice. John retired from Sidley Austin in 2015.
John was appointed to the Board of Trustees of Centre College in 1990 and served as a proud member of the Board until 2021.
In 2002 through 2016, John was vice chairman of the Board of Directors for the Center for Family Representation, which provides legal and social services to families in Manhattan and Queens.
John was the loving father of Laura Holloway Newman and Alexander Harrison Newman. He is survived by his brother, Herbert S. Newman, III (Marciadee), and his sister, Mary Anne Womble (Mike), of Naples, FL.
John never met a stranger, and he was a man of great character and strength. He was a thoughtful, kind, considerate and caring friend to all who knew him. He will be missed.
