Jim was born September 12, 1927 in Chicago, IL to James Sr. and Ellen (nee Ryan) Johnston. They preceded him in death. Jim was also preceded by his first wife, Madelyn, and his sister Arlene.
Jim is survived by his wife, Marie DiMare Johnston of Naples, FL, his four children, James W (Kristine) Johnston of Bloomington, IL; Denis (Lori) Johnston of Olympia Fields, IL; Mary Madelyn Johnston of St. Louis, MO; and Joan Elizabeth Hitt of St. Louis, MO, six grandchildren, and six greatgrandchildren. When Jim married Marie, he gained 4 step-children, five step-grandchildren, and one step-greatgrandchild.
Jim got his start in life as a Patent Illustrator, working for many patent attorneys in the Chicago area. After a number of years, he went out on his own and worked independently for 43 years. Once retired, Jim relocated to Naples, Florida and enjoyed the wonderful Florida beaches. He loved to gather shells and create sea shell sculptures. Before his career in Chicago, Jim proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy as a Seaman during WWII. Last year Jim was selected to go on the WWII Honor Flight to Washington D.C. to visit the war memorials. It made a huge impact on him and felt very privileged to be able to participate.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at St. William Catholic Church 601 Seagate Dr, Naples, FL 34108. Burial will follow at Hodges Funeral Home at Naples Memorial Gardens 525 111th Ave. N., Naples, FL 34108. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Avow Hospice 1095 Whippoorwill Lane, Naples, FL 34105 or a cancer charity of your choice.
