Edward Alfred (Ted) Perry, beloved husband of Corinne, loving father to his children Zach (Aleya), Alisma, and Andrina (Karen-Marie), and brother to Gail (Harvey), died at home in Nanaimo on July 23rd. He also leaves a large extended family and many friends in BC, Ontario, and around the world.
Ted grew up in Woodbridge, Ontario, completed a BSc in Biology at York, then moved with Corinne to Vancouver where he completed a Masters in Zoology at UBC. Ted brought enthusiasm and dedication to his 33 year career with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Beginning as a biologist in 1976 in Vancouver, he progressed through management positions to become a director at the Pacific Biological Station in Nanaimo from 2000 until his retirement in 2009.
Ted was not just a marine biology enthusiast at work. He enjoyed many fishing adventures with his family and friends and had a surprising amount of fish related art. He relished the many years spent living on Nanaimo's waterfront beside Pipers Lagoon Park, where he could kayak, swim, and watch eagles, whales, river otters, bathtubs, and all manner of other passing life.
Ted was an environmentalist and supporter of the arts, spending many years volunteering with worthy causes, including Streamkeepers in North Vancouver, the Nanaimo Advisory Committee on Environmental Sustainability, Nanaimo's Port Theatre, and Meals on Wheels.
Ted's favourite memories involved playing and partying with the Old Buzzards hockey team in North Vancouver, watching his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs (despite their bad luck), hiking and bird-watching with family, golfing with friends, and tearing out lawns to construct beautiful gardens with Corinne.
Over their 56 years of marriage, Ted and Corinne enjoyed travelling around Canada, the U.S., Mexico, and Europe, including a year spent in Aarhus, Denmark where Ted worked as a lecturer. Ted was never happier than when his family was gathered together laughing their heads off at a silly joke, especially if it was a cheesy dad joke told by him.
Many thanks to the health care workers who supported Ted and his family over the last several months.
There will be a Memorial Service at Tigh-Na-Mara on Sunday, August 18 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Ted and family encourage donations to Doctors Without Borders or the Pacific Salmon Foundation.
