Denis Joseph McNamee, 83, of Nanaimo, British Columbia, passed away on Thursday, February 23, 2023. He was predeceased by his parents, James Owen McNamee and Elianne Dubord, and his two older brothers, James Paul and Paul Francis.
Denis was born in Bonnyville, Alberta, but raised in B.C. His life as an educator began in the Greater Vancouver area, followed by several years in the Eastern Arctic as a teacher and school principal. He returned to coastal B.C. to settle in Nanaimo and Yellow Point, and spent many years teaching at Woodlands, Wellington, and Nanaimo Secondary Schools. He will be particularly remembered by fellow members of the Nanaimo District Teachers’ Association.
Denis was an accomplished traveler and an avid reader. He had a keen interest in current events and politics and listened to CBC radio. He enjoyed boating and motorcycling and was proud of his EV. He was also very fond of beagles and his rescue cat, Jade. Denis is survived by his loving children, Sandra Angèle, Thomas, Sylvia, daughter-in-law Chris, grandchildren Roey and Grace, dear friend and wife of many years, Carol, and is fondly remembered by family, friends, and students.
A service to commemorate his life will be held at Christ Community Church at 2221 Bowen Rd., Nanaimo, B.C., on Saturday April 1st from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Hemochromatosis Society have been requested with appreciation.
