A graveside service will be conducted by Pastor Lani Rousseau of Perritte Memorial United Methodist Church at 10:00 am, Thursday April 2, 2015, at East Memorial Gardens 5200 East Broad Street in Texarkana, Arkansas.
Jerrel was a very special man, deeply loved by his family and friends. He was a great husband and father and an exceptional grandfather. He spent his early years in southwestern Arkansas, where he graduated from Hope High School.. Jerrel was then drafted into the Army in 1943 and served in New Guinea and the Philippine Islands, participating in five major battles, before being wounded in action in the Phillipines. After returning to the states he met and married Eris Beasley, with whom he remained married for the next 63 years. Jerrel lived in Newport Arkansas, Texarkana and Dallas before acquiring his job at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, working in the Physical Plant. until retirement.
In his free time you could find him working in his woodshop, building odds and ends and birdhouses. He enjoyed gardening and reading history books, especially those about World War II in the Pacific. In retirement, he and Eris traveled throughout the United States, but their favorite place was home in Nacogdoches, spending time with friends, family, and each other.
Jerrel was preceded in death by his four siblings, brothers Basil, Carlis, and Hollis Belk and sister Lorene House. He is survived by his wife, Eris Beasley Belk, one son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Nina Belk of Spring, Texas, two granddaughters, Katherine and Hillary, as well as sisters-in-law Laverne Belk of Little Rock, Arkansas, Joyce Keith of Texarkana, and Mary Beasley of Dallas, Texas and brother and sister-in-law Gordon and Betty Beasley of Conway, Arkansas as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
