Mrs. Mabel L. Stewart, 92, died April 28, 2016, at Stallings Court Nursing Home. She was born December 22, 1923, in Houston, Texas to parents Granville and Lillah Peterson. After losing her mother at the age of three, she lived in Dayton, TX being raised by her father and step-mother, Pearl Peterson.
Mabel moved to Houston after school to further her education and start her career. She worked at the Chamber of Commerce of Houston. She married Charles Stewart and they began their family. Later, she went to work as a customer service representative for Valspar Paint, and she retired from there after 36 years of service. After her work day at Valspar, Mabel would join her husband at their drugstore to help him finish his day and keep up with the accounting.
Charlie’s death and retiring, she soon discovered she needed a new outlet to work. She began volunteer work at Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital and “worked” there for 20 years, only retiring due to her failing health. She truly loved her work. Reluctantly leaving her neighborhood and friends, she moved to Nacogdoches in 2010 to be closer to her family.
She is preceded in death by her parents, step-mother, Pearl Peterson; husband, Charles Stewart; and brother, Don Peterson.
Mabel is survived by her son, Randy Stewart and wife Pat; grandchildren, Brent Stewart and wife Heather, Cassie Stewart; great grandchildren, Austin Stewart, Ashton Stewart, Avery Stewart, all of Nacogdoches; brother, John Peterson of Poulsbo, Washington.
