John attended Livingston High School, completed preprofessional work at Texas A&M in College Station, and graduated from the University of Texas Dental School in Houston. In 1971, John moved to Nacogdoches, where he opened his orthodontics practice. Later in his professional career, he practiced in Jacksonville in the office of Dr. Charles Creed, and in Center in the office of Dr. Danny Paul Windham.
John was the quintessential outdoorsman. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, exploring the Rocky Mountains, stargazing, and following whooping cranes in Rockport. John loved reading, driving country roads in the Texas Hill Country, and traveling across the country following professional rodeos.
John is survived by daughter Julie Cassity Buchta and son-in-law Brian Buchta of Kingwood, and son Danny Cassity of Lufkin. John leaves behind four grandchildren Erin Buchta and Logan Buchta of Kingwood, David Cassity of Austin, and Lauren Cassity of Dallas. He is survived by his brother Gus Cassity and sister-in-law Michelle of Kerrville, sister Beth McClammy and brother-in-law Glenn McClammy of Silsbee, nephew Vince McClammy, and nieces Emily Lankford and Sarah Brottem. John was predeceased by his parents and brother William Cassity.
The family is planning a private inurnment at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Carthage, and a scattering in the Rocky Mountains.
