James Barrett (Jim) Miller was born on September 17, 1942 in Shamrock, Texas, the first-born son of Joe Earl Miller and Melba Franks Miller. He grew up in Borger, Texas, with his younger brother, Denny. His family relocated to Pasadena, Texas, in the mid-50s. Jim graduated from Deer Park High School, Lee Junior College (AA), and the University of Houston (BA). Following his graduation from college, he did postgraduate studies in history and English. Jim had an avid interest in history, especially local lore. He taught world history and homiletics (preaching) at Southern Bible College in Houston.
Jim’s life was dramatically changed when on February 2, 1964, at the age of 22 years, he committed his life to Christ. On that same day, his mother and brother did the same. Later, in 1966, following his call into Christian ministry, he took his first church in Buna, Texas. In 1967, his son, Scott, was born to him and his wife, Linda. Jim also pastored churches in Lake Jackson, Brenham, and Cypress, Texas.
Jim moved to Nacogdoches in 1987 to assume ownership of Daystar Christian Book & Music Center, a business he operated until 2000. During this time, He remained active in ministry. Because of his great heart for the youth of East Texas, he sponsored 50 concerts with charting contemporary Christian artists. He also initiated and directed “Christian Skatenite,” a program which continued for ten years at the local skating rink. For a time, Jim served as a deejay at KSWP-FM radio station in Lufkin. He was active in interdenominational efforts in the area. In addition, Jim wrote a weekly book review column for the Daily Sentinel that continued for almost 20 years. Jim married Stephanie Arnold, in 1995. In 2000, he and Stephanie founded the Vineyard Church of Nacogdoches. The church is currently led by Phil and Joann Novak.
Jim is survived by his wife, Stephanie Helen Miller of Springfield, Missouri; his brother, Denzil Ray Miller and wife Sandra of Springfield, Missouri; and his son, Wesley Scott Miller and wife Melanie of Nacogdoches. He is also survived by his step-children Kelly Elizabeth Dramberger and husband Ted of Conroe, Texas, and Aaron Paul Arnold and wife Erica of Colleyville, Texas. Jim is further survived by seven precious grandchildren: Nate, Molly, Grayson, Bryce, Andrew, Sage, and Addison along with many nieces and nephews. In addition, he leaves behind many friends and spiritual children.
He will be missed.
