A Witness to the Resurrection Memorial Service for James Galen Dickson (Jim) will be held on Sunday, April 12, 2015 at 2:00 pm at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Nacogdoches. Steve Newton, pastor and friend will officiate.
Jim died on March 18, 2015, with his beloved son at his side, his wife and The Hospice of East Texas standing by. James G. Dickson was born May 26, 1935, in Hugo, Oklahoma, to James Galen and Nina Holland Dickson. He moved to Texas in 1947, where he graduated from Honey Grove High School. James also graduated from the University of North Texas and The University of Texas at Austin. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1952 to 1960, serving on active duty from 1955 to 1958 at the Naval Air Station, Dallas. He and Martha Jane Barker of Honey Grove, Texas, were married June 1, 1956. Jim taught history and government in community colleges in Odessa and Big Spring and taught Texas Government and Constitutional Law at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches from 1964 to May 2000, retiring as Regents Professor Emeritus of Political Science
He is survived by his wife Martha Barker Dickson of Nacogdoches, his son John David Dickson of Sherman Oaks, California, brother-in-law David Barker of Saginaw, Michigan, one aunt, and several cousins and their families. He will be remembered as a loving father, husband and friend, a conscientious teacher, loyal Longhorn and Lumberjack, lover of music, books and movies, and writer of inspirational verse.
Memorials may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, the John Dickson Music Scholarship at Stephen F. Austin, any organization benefitting children and animals or a charity of your choice. Our sincere appreciation goes to The Visiting Angels and our many supportive, loving friends for coming to our rescue.
